Anything which can drop back to the Vodafone network gets my vote - their signal is uniformly excellent. Net access...not so excellent, but depends on package. Speed won't be anything to write home about unless you're on 3G anyway, so 3's your only option if you need that.
Aren't there enough unsecured wifi nets around your student housing? There were always tons in Southampton, look for 'NETGEAR' and 'belkin54g' which always have the default admin passwords too ;-)
