Doesn't really work so well in the US where at least half the people with cell phones have probably never sent a text message and wouldn't know what to do if they got one.

Oh man, that's odd. They're an essential way to convey a joke, or ask someone if they want a beer, without the hassle of small talk.

I find them useful for that sort of thing, but I just don't do it that often. And I do it more than most of my friends (I believe). It's hard to say though, because half of the grad students here seem to have something against owning a cell phone to begin with.

I never had a cell phone for my first year of uni, but now I'm wondering how the hell anyone could live without it.
