I hear you on partner opening 1N with stiffs. Once in blue moon ok, more than that difficult to deal with.
On your opening those 6 and 7 loser hands,(pretty friggin light in my book) you open those in a pairs game also? One area of my game that I have difficulty with is knowing how to bid with a partner that opens pretty weak hands in 1st seat. How do I overcome that?
I'd say it depends on what you mean by "weak" hands... balanced 10 and 11 counts (not to mention crappy 12 and 13 counts) getting opened opposite is a real drain on me, and I tend not to play with those people more than I have to. But opening the 9-11 HCP hands with more playing strength than a balanced 13? A great idea. The other day I held AJT9xxx xx x ATx and was thrilled to open 1S. Think about it-- in money bridge, would you rather pick up that "9-count" or the "strong notrump" of KQJ QJx QJx QJxx? The way I look at it is: when partner opens good, distributional hands at the one level with less than 12 HCP, we'll go down in more games-- but we'll also make many more games than we'll go down in. I don't agree that losing trick count is the only/best way of evaluating these light hands, though.
Also: If your partner regularly opens 1N with stiffs, tell him that the next time he does it, you'll punch him in the face. Fistfights are better for partnership confidence than that BS.
Well done in the GNTs, and well done on a good writeup. Quite exciting! It reminded me a lot of my favorite Bridge World article, Larry Cohen and Mike Becker's "Never Say Die".
