One of the things we're going to talk about later on is the challenge of generating income that does not hinge on showing up. Let's face it, we can only be in one place at any given time. That puts a limit on how much we can earn for performing. It also means that when we cannot show up to perform, either because we're physically unable to do so ( ( Read more... )

I am conflicted about this video.

I like the idea that payment doesnt have to be money and it can be 1000 other things.

The thing is, Amanda Palmer has a fucking millionaire husband behind her and will never have to worry about food. Now, she did when she just started out, and I get that, and i get that she payed her dues, but she also acts like people who play with her shouldnt have to worry about money either. And thats where I get flummoxed.

She also had a record company behind her, which probably helped her get the kind of notoriety that attracts Twitter followers and project backers. It also takes a certain kind of person to be comfortable crashing with strangers and so on.

She does, however, make some good points about being able to be honest about who we are, being willing to ask for compensation and making our creative work available to an audience. Those are the things I intend to go back to and talk about later on.

I share your conflicted feelings... There are so many of the sentiments she expresses here that I really like. I believe in the power of quid pro quo. I believe that as long as both parties feel they're getting what they want out of an exchange, it's not unfair or exploitative. I believe that the current model of distribution and payment for copyrighted work needs to change ( ... )

Thanks for explaining what went down with all of that. My personal opinion of AP was that she's a little (or a lot) self-involved. She'd turn up in articles about Neil Gaiman, usually going out of her way to attract as much attention as possible and I'd end up being annoyed with the both of them. The best part would be the pictures of her acting like an insane person and everyone else just trying to ignore the hell out of her.

I've seen successful crowd-sourcing projects that earned several times the planned goal, but the best ones would have stretch goals so people knew where the extra money would go (more tracks for the album, more paid musicians on tour, extra performance dates and so on.) I get the impression that AFP either figured she could just pocket the money, or she has failed to understand that not every professional musician wants to (or should) do what she does.
