I really like Wreck-It Ralph. The first time I saw it, I enjoyed the movie but I came away feeling like the second half went off in a direction that didn't work. I had been expecting a very different movie and the way things played out didn't match with my expectations from the trailer. Then I had some time to let the movie settle in and I watched ( Read more... )

I want to know who told her she had to take a cab to auditions. Even my undergraduate teacher who was a total alarmist never said that.

That one really left my jaw hanging. Who the heck says that? maybe a person who had a bad experience on a subway?

I was also surprised that no one was questioning where the bad advice was coming from and focusing on schools and teachers putting out misleading information. Instead, they all wanted to dogpile the author because she must be bitter and not as good as they think they are.

And I know at least one person in that thread who is quite successful but not because they sing well.

Right! I don't think it's about how talented or not talented the writer is, because how can we possibly know that? It's about poor advice leading to poor business decisions.

On the other hand, it's nice to have my own plans validated by people who know what they're talking about.

I wonder if they also told her to inform the panel that she washed her face and hands before she came.

There's more to it than that. Yes, she was clearly given bad advice by people who helped her believe what she wanted to believe, but look at her attitude. She wasn't after simply being an opera singer. She was all about being the lead soprano. But oh, her voice won't be fully mature for another dacade or so. So what does she do? Does she realize her advisors gave her shitty advice? Does she maybe take a day job while she auditions everywhere and does workshops and takes voice lessons and sings in concerts and maybe does some community opera? No, she abandons opera completely. And then blogs about it like it was all opera's fault.
