4:3 Letter Box : Select when you connect the player to a 4:3 TV screen. The player will display all content in its original aspect ratio. Content formatted in 16:9 will be displayed with black bars on the top and bottom

Yup - mentioned doing that in the post (don't blame you for not seeing it; lots of info up there). Didn't work.

I will keep looking, though -- thanks!

Can you use an HDMI cable and run it from your laptop to the TV?

The TV is an ancient CRT that only has RCA input. Will edit the post to reflect this.

I suppose you could always use editing software to change the aspect ratio of the AVI file.

It lacks elegance but, could work.

but the .avi file *is* 16:9. It plays in 16:9 on the computer.

Right. Change it to a 4:3 file with letterboxing so it will play properly on the TV.

Maybe use something like MPEGStreamclip to letterbox it to 4:3?

Heh, stereo, that's what I get for forgetting to hit post :P
