I saw the trailer when I went to see Lincoln (brilliant, btw) on Friday. My problem is that, with the exception of Hugh Jackman, it looks like none of the starring roles in the cast can actually SING! From what I heard in the trailer Anne Hathaway and Russell Crowe both sounded like shit. Why did they not hire people who can sing? The people who played the roles on stage are trained actors as well as singers... why not hire *them* !!?

We'll have to agree to disagree about the singing. In my opinion, Anne Hathaway is a terrific singer (her singing onstage with Hugh Jackman at the Oscars a few years ago was a highlight), and she was a musical theater performer before she was a movie star -- as was Amanda Seyfried (adult Cosette: trained as an opera singer, was a professional singer/songwriter, and played the daughter in the movie version of Mamma Mia), Eddie Redmayne (Marius: he's been in several West End musicals), Aaron Tveit (Enjolras: he's performed in musicals on Broadway), etc.

Maybe look at the featurette I've posted a link to, to hear more of the singing.

I must remember to take kleenix. I still remember the first time I saw it -- I had heard a few songs and ended up getting the cds, but for some reason had fixated on disk 1 and hadn't actually listened to disk 2 when a touring group came through town. So I was completely unspoilered for the 2nd half of the musical when I saw it. And for some reason, the fact that it is called "LES MISERABLES" didn't even twig.

Needless to say, I was a bit of a wreck, and my shirtsleeves were soaked. ;-)

I am so taking my mom for Xmas. :-)
