http://reborn.wikia.com/wiki/Fran Character Personality:
When describing Fran, two words (paired together) come immediately to mind: Snarky brat. Fran has been given the gift of being an insightful deadpan commentator, with the added fortune of being an insufferable brat at times. He’s critical and condescending, childish, and most of all, apathetic to most situations. He’s verbally antagonistic to just about everybody, giving friends (if you can really call them that) the same sort of mouthy snark he’d give his worst enemy. Pointing out the faults of the people surrounding him with an unbreakable pokerface is a personal pastime, it seems. He’s been described as a person who sees misfortune as a way of life, and therefore can cast an apathetic attitude to just about anything that comes his way.
Though he shows sheer stubbornness and rebellion through his words, in his actions, Fran is completely passive. Indeed, even when reduced to looking like a cactus by knives being thrown at him or being forced to wear a stupid-looking frog hat at knife-point, the most retaliation he’ll give is a slightly annoyed quip and a few crocodile tears. Though he expresses intense dislike for some of his comrades, he’ll even ask for permission to kill them from those who have power over him. This extends to orders: if he’s given one by his boss or master, he’ll do it, regardless of the verbal rebellion he might give. Fran is a “brilliant but lazy” type: he prefers to be ordered around rather than think for himself. However, if something does catch his interest, he’ll find a way to follow that goal without bending the rules or orders he’s been given, and staying in them within technicalities. It’s all about the details, really.
Though he displays some signs of apathetic cruelty, Fran is not one to be considered “evil”. He’s entirely neutral to situations of conflict around him, preferring to stay on the sidelines and snark rather than get involved and fight. When he has to fight, he’ll use his highest-class illusions to fight for him, rather than actually battle. He’s a coward at heart: those illusions are used for running away rather than fighting more often than not. He doesn’t hold the same reverence that the rest of the Varia holds for violence; it’s just another thing he “has” to do as part of orders. However, if you annoy him enough, he’ll politely request to kill you and most likely follow through on it.
When not chiding away at his obviously less-intelligent comrades or commentating away on the sidelines of the battlefield, Fran is rather quiet. He prefers to look out the window at the pretty night sky than talk, really. His words are used wisely; if it was up to him, he would prefer to be alone. His constant pokerface, monotone and apparent emotionless-ness suggest a true loner.
However, this cynical, apathetic little froggy has a childish heart. Despite the fact that he has such amazing powers and intelligence, he uses them for little more than childish pranks, to the point of thinking that is their only purpose. In a way, the illusions and pranks are a way to attract attention to himself, stating with apparent happiness that he had become a “celebrity” through his powers. Sometimes his constant insults come across as childish teasing, and his great detail taken in explaining just about everything is due to a natural curiosity of the world. He’s always been fond of superheroes, and tries to emulate their cool poses in battle. So far, the hat has gotten in the way, but hey, he’s determined.
Character Abilities:
First and foremost, Fran is a master illusionist, one of the top three in his world. Illusions, as they work in canon, are real to the point of being able to damage or even kill whomever they are cast on. For instance, if an illusionist of Fran’s caliber was to cast an illusion of fire on someone, they would burn. He can change his appearance, blend himself into surroundings, cast talking and fighting illusions of other people, and change the appearance of others. Most often, however, he uses illusions for childish pranks.
Though skinny for his age and very short, Fran is shown to be quite fit by jumping from tree to tree with great speed and without showing exhaustion. As a member of the Varia assassination squad, Fran is well-versed in battle tactics, even though he takes a supporting role. Though he does not fight physically, he knows how to dodge and counter a punch.
Fran is seemingly immune to pain as well. He can take a trident to the head or over twenty knives to his back and give nothing more than a disparaging statement and a few fake tears.
As required for all Varia members, Fran knows seven languages, three of which are Italian, English and Japanese. In addition, he is described by Reborn as being a genius, most likely in the fields of illusions and “book-smarts”, rather than the battle tactics and strategy-based intelligence his comrades possess.
Fran was given the “gift” of the 666 Hell Ring, a ring that grants the user vast power in battle, but at the cost of 666 moments of misfortune before a single moment of pure fortune happens. His personality accepts this misfortune as a part of life, but he still complains about it.
Constantly.
Character Weaknesses:
Though he totes the former with pride and the latter unintentionally, Fran’s weakness lies within his cynicism and childishness. Because of his degrading nature, it’s very hard for him to socialize with people his age, not to mention those older and in authority. It’s hard for him to empathize with those around him, his apathy getting in the way of any sympathy he may have for those less fortunate. Due to his condescending nature and love of pushing people’s buttons, many find themselves just plain too annoyed to speak with him, contributing to his poorly-socialized nature.
Due to his meticulous attention to detail, Fran sometimes fails to see the big picture. Instead of seeing all the possibilities illusions can be used for, he sees them as little more than tools of pranking. He tends to overly focus on a person’s faults and characterizes them based on those, rather than seeing the entire person.
Fran is short and skinny, contributing to physical weakness, in itself a huge weakness in the field of assassination. Therefore, he overly relies on illusions to cover for his weakness, and this overreliance has lead to cowardice. Despite being an assassin, he ducks away for cover at a direct attack, and runs away from battle using his illusions whenever possible. It doesn’t help that he’s incredibly whiney about it as well.
Fran is also a hypocrite. Though he claims his Master has a “twisted, grotesque mind”, his own illusions draw from horror films by being particularly gory down to the detail. Even if he calls his comrades insane and violent animals, he casually threatens to kill both Belphegor and a fallen foe. Despite having such distaste to his surroundings, it shows his weakness to influence through how they have corrupted him.
[ SOUL CAMPAIGN SECTION ]
What are the abilities that your character will retain in Soul Campaign?:
Though he will lose his illusionary powers, Fran will retain the skills learned as an assassin- speed, battle tactics and defensive maneuvers. He is a genius, and will not be losing intelligence as he arrives in death city. His pain tolerance will also remain at the insanely high level that it is as well. He has to be able to deal with those knives somehow.
What are the weaknesses that your character will lose or gain in Soul Campaign?:
Fran will have to lose (at least partially) his poor social skills in order to function in soul campaign. In addition, he’ll have to confront conflict without using his illusions to run away; he just can’t hide anymore. Also, he’ll have to see the big picture: this is a war after all. Things aren’t limited to just the details.
However, Fran will become even less willing to fight due to the loss of his illusions. He identifies himself with them: he’s a top magician above anything else; to lose that will be to lose part of his identity. He’ll probably be less confident in his strength and therefore more melancholy about his self. He’ll rely more on his partner to do things for him, losing what little independence that he had before.
[ SOUL INFORMATION ]
Soul Description: Condescending, apathetic, cynical, misfortunate, intelligent and childish.
Soul Appearance: Fran’s soul is a light green color, the exact same shade of his hair. The eyes of the soul are half lidded, giving a very blank and apathetic stare; a small frown gracing the mouth of his soul. The top of his soul seems to be wearing an impossibly large frog hat (
http://www.cosplayisland.co.uk/files/costumes/3168/26322/fran_reborn.jpg), colored the same as his soul and seemingly fused into it.
They just can’t let him go anywhere without it, can they.
[ SAMPLES ]
First Person:
[The feed clicks on to show a new face, one green haired teenager wearing a large, comical looking frog hat and pressing the SOS button very rapidly, a blank yet annoyed expression plastered on his face. He’s holding up one arm, the hand of which has turned into what seems to be the blade of a throwing knife.]
[However, he’s using the communicator and doesn’t seem to be particularly panicked. He must’ve watched the introduction video, at least?]
Hello, ah, Shibusen SOS people? My hand has turned into a knife. This does not typically happen to me, so I am assuming it’s your universes’ fault. Please fix this.
[Okay, he may have skipped over listening to a few of the details in the video.]
And Master, if this is one of your pranks, it’s pretty bad even for you. You could have done much better than turning my arm into one of Bel-senpai’s stupid throwing knives. It’s not even accurate- the blade is all wrong. I would know.
[Another glare into the screen, and it clicks off.]
Third Person:
That battle- it really had been exhausting. Though he did use his illusions to mask the locations as the other combatants successfully, helping lead the varia and the vongola guardians to win the battle, Fran felt that his Master did really overwork him too much for the amount of recognition he got for said achievement. Really, breaking him out of prison, flying him to Japan and then protecting him from having his power sucked away from that giant naked man- he felt that deserved at least a little bit of praise. He hardly considered stabbing as “recognition” anyway.
So after he arrived home to Italy and when he lay down on his home pillow- if you can even call it that- he felt a mixture of relived and a bit disappointed. That was a pretty big battle after all; he could’ve at least gotten a cool hero pose figured out during it. But such thoughts could come later, in the morning, hopefully after breakfast and before the daily barrage of knives and tequila bottles were thrown at his head.
A fact of Fran’s life, one that he was not particularly fond of, was the familiarity he had with being kidnapped. Mukuro had taken him in, and him being Mukuro, it wasn’t exactly a choice. Then, those idiots from the Varia caught him off guard, tied him up with rope, and dragged him off to Italy in order to serve a life of indentured servitude, or “being the baby officer”, as they like to call it. It was a concept that he was very familiar with, and it was not exactly his favorite experience to undergo through as a result.
So when he wakes up in a dark chamber, covered in chains and warning signs, the only thing he canreally feel was a slight sense of annoyance. Really, he thought that Boss had the mansion guarded better than that. And the kidnappers really have a bad sense of taste. This place looks like something from a cheap horror movie he’d seen on TV a while ago and-
Oh. Hello. TV screens turning on. This must be the “and here’s how much money you’ll need to work off to get free” speech. Sigh. He sits down, arms around his knees, and listens with a bored ear. Well, partially listens, at least.
“A war is going on with the witches…shibusen…Brew…weapons and misters…”
“This is really just like a poorly-made movie. The plot line is so typical. Boring~” He says, yawning slightly and further increasing the distance between his attention span and the words being spoken by that red-haired guy- Spirit, was it? He didn’t pay enough attention to care. “Ch. When are they going to tell me the amount of money they need for ransom?
One part does grab his attention, however.
“Ah? My powers are gone?” He blinks, looking surprised for just a moment, before apathy returns to his features. That’s it- this must be a prank, a really bad one from Master. Only he would include that detail, the one thing that would make Fran lose his poker face.
So he decides to play along for now, obey the screens with that annoying red-haired guy. Once he found Master, he’d break this stupid illusion and replace it with something much cooler.
The walls really were too tacky, anyway.
