Military Provocation of Russia in Crimea. The Fight for the South-Eastern Ukraine. 27.02.14 - 01.03.

Mar 17, 2014 00:29

Now there can be no doubts that while Ukraine (or people, opposition, oligarchs, the West - whatever you believe is right) were fighting against the regime of Yanukovich, Russia was preparing to stab in the back, specifically - preparing provocations in the South-East.
The Parliament of Crimea under the lead of Regions Party has been trying to separate Crimea from Ukraine for several months already. This was never taken seriously, all the attention being concentrated on the primary task of dealing with Yanukovich. At night on February 27 the situation began to escalate. The Parliament of Crimea was captured by armed people, who wore no decals of grade and refused to comment or state anything. No one doubts, however, that they are Russian soldiers.

However, this people let 47 deputies enter the Parliament building under the lead of the speaker Vladimir Konstantinov, who is known for his scams with real estate at "Consol" LLC. Above deputies having in their possession the voting cards of the remaining deputies made a resolution on the following:
  • by 61 votes out of 64 voting - to hold an all-Crimean referendum on May 25 to decide a vague issue «Do you support state independence of Autonomous Republic of Crimea as part of Ukraine on the basis of treaties and agreements?» (the scam against Crimean’s using this vague phrasing is described in detail here);
  • by 55 votes out of 64 voting - to pass a no-confidence motion against the Head of the Council of Ministers of Crimea Anatoliy Mogilev and relieved him of his duties of the head of the government;
  • to elect as a former bandit, also known by the nickname Goblin, who is also the leader of the "Russian Communion " party, Sergey Aksenov as the Prime-Minister.
As if by accident on February 27 as well Yanukovich comes around and announces a press-conference in Rostov-na-Donu for Friday, February 28.His speech was typical for his line - vague phrases, mispronunciations, avoiding answers to straight questions. What was noticeable - he stated that he considers himself to be the President of Ukraine because he is still alive and has not resigned, told how his grandson almost got “lustrated” in the kindergarten (as if we believed that his grandson attends a kindergarten), complained that his car was attacked by fire (we do remember that quite recently he said that Rybak’s car was attacked by fire, and soon after that Rybak refuted this information) and mentioned that in Mezhigorye he owns only a house with a small land plot, which house he had to repair at his own expense. As far as I remember that was the first live press-conference of Yanukovich without the questions being prepared in advance by loyal journalists. Even the "Unian" journalist was given the floor.

In the meantime the developments unfold rapidly. Pro-russian forces arrange protests in Sevastopol and Simferopol, Civil Self-Defense in military uniform places road-blocks at the entrance to Sevastopol in Crimea Ukrtelecom is cut off and Russian soldiers of the Black Sea Fleet capture airports in Sevastopol and Simferopol, Russian Armoured Vanguard Vehicles and military cars drive around Crimea, Russian military motor boat blocks the Balaklava Bay where Ukrainian boats are stationed (official reason -engine crash), and Russian military block Ukrainian state border service. Aksenov adopts resolutions whereby he moved under his control Crimean special forces, army and fleet and reappoints the date of the referendum in Crimea for March 30.

By the way, the Crimean-Tatar Medzhlis does not recognize the new Council of Ministers of Crimea. Some former Ukrainian Berkut soldiers have already received Russian passports, which is probably good news and we keep hoping that they would also be provided with dwelling in Russia and tickets.

It is too obvious that Russia is trying to provoke Ukraine into a conflict. In the meantime the informational war continues. Russian mass media and blogs are full of information regarding evil extremist-Baderovtsy and the "rescue" mission of Russia in Crimea. The formal excuse for "outbreak" of armed Crimean’s in camouflage is being presented to be cancellation of the Act on Regional Languages by Kolesnichenko, whereby Russian language was recognized as regional in Crimea. Of course they do not popularise the fact that from 1991 to 2012 Ukraine lived happily without this Act and Russian language was not oppressed in the slightest. Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued deceptive information on the capture with casualties of Crimean Internal Affairs Ministry Central Administration, while RIA news - misinformation on the manoeuvres of the Ukrainian military boats. However official Moscow still insists that Russian military has nothing to do with the events in Crimea, while everything is attributable to self-organized locals.

On March 1 at about 4 PM Putin made a statement to the Federation Council on using military forces of the RF on the territory of Ukraine until the military political situation there comes back to normal; and almost immediately the Federation Council of the RF unanimously gave its consent to the President of Russia Vladimir Putin to bring troops into Ukraine.
Doesn’t that ring a bell?

“Over ten million Germans live in two of the States adjoining our frontiers… It is unbearable for a world power to know there are racial comrades at its side who are constantly being afflicted with the severest suffering for their sympathy or unity with the whole nation, its destiny and its Weltanschauung [world view]. To the Interests of the German Reich belong the protection of those German peoples who are not in a position to secure along our frontiers their political and spiritual freedom by their own efforts.”
Adolf Hitler, February 20, 1938

On the same day in Kharkov, Lugansk, Odessa and Dneproptrovsk protests and conflicts with the police take place, regional administrations are being captured by the Russia supporters, there are casualties. But it sound a bit strange that for example the Russian flag in Kharkov is being raised by the Moscow citizen and rumours spread about buses with people from russian city Belgorod.

Ukraine has nothing else left to do but to put the army on a war footing, remain unprovoked, not to enter into conflicts with the military forces of the " fraternal " people and turn for help to EU, USA and NATO.
By the way, the polling results in the zyalt's blog shows that even the majority of Russians do not support separation of Crimea from Ukraine.

Here is a good post-opinion regarding the situation by a Crimean. And one more by a Feodosia citizen.

As well as all my friends and relatives I am shocked by such obnoxious invasion by Russia, even if it is only for prevocational purposes, and then Putin will say that "I’m in the clear " - "the army is not ours,self-defense is all Crimean, the soldiers are driving the Armoured Vanguard Vehicles just for fun, the motor boat broke down, and we are fraternal peoples and friends, how could you think otherwise!".
Many bloggers refer to geopolitics when commenting Putin’s position, but why not capture Zakarpatye than - it has a very advantageous geopolitical location. There also is a view that it is a trick by Putin in order to eventually make his old friend Yulia Timishenko the President, but conspiracy theories are not my strongest field of expertise.

How the Russian authorities can’t understand that irrespective of the outcome of these events Russia will lose its scanty allies and partners in the world? More than once recently I have heard the same thing from Ukrainians that call themselves Russians - that they will not do the same mistake again.

Furthermore, these events force the Ukrainian authorities not being able to stand against the Russian army alone to turn for help to other military-political blocs and to station military bases on its territory where necessary in order to prevent such help from "fraternal" people in the future, which is logical. Also a response from the world community is also possible in the form of economic sanctions for such outspoken occupational politics.

Could an extra resort, geopolitical interests or political gambling be really worth it?

P.S. Russian brothers, please, don’t act like that in the comments, or I’ll have to ban you. Please, write your opinions not insults. It is a really interesting issue to discuss.
