Library computers are not for you to go on your MYSPACE, FACEBOOK, and/or sports sites.  They are not for you to sit around for hours at a time browsing your email.   They are also not for you to sit at playing games when you have a perfectly usable computer in your room. And if you don't have a computer, buy one!  You can get a decent PC for 100- ( Read more... )

I completely agree with this! I spent a half an hour yesterday wandering around the library trying to find a free computer so I could look up the shelf location of a book.

This should also be brought to the attention of the library staff.

We're [library faculty] very much aware of the problem and trying to get the $$ and space for more computers, plus working with ITS to look at printing from laptops.

We hear you!!!

The library has enough computers, it just needs the ITS staff to actually get up and tell people to get off the computers when they sit there on their myspaces forever.

I used to go to computer labs and print but then first semester they always seemed to be closed/under construction so I just gave up and started coming to the library.

Perhaps you'd like to have the job of policing the computers and kicking people off when they're doing anything that isn't school-related?

I do this only because I live on Alumni and have nothing to do for hours in between my classes. But if someone needs to print something out and they ask me I always let them. I'd even leave the computer if they needed to type something. But people rarely ask.

Yeah I understand that. I just don't think that's the majority of people. I mean obviously you don't wanna lug your laptop everywhere, gets pointless after a while and heavy.

Hmm, well I don't have the $100-200 to buy a computer, and won't in the near future. Perhaps Outtakes can stock them, so we can put our munch money to use?

It wouldn't hurt to ask those people if you could use them for a minute or two to print off a page. Hell, if someone needed it for that long, I'd give it up. Who's going to say no and risk looking like an asshole?

Lastly, if you spent half an hour looking for a computer, you were probably in there around lunchtime. EVERYONE is in there around lunchtime. There are certainly less crowded hours of the day than that. By about 1pm, there are usually a few open in the back room on the 1st floor.

Good luck!

P.S. Guess where I am posting this from. ;)

They should have dedicated computers where everything else is locked out except for book search items.

Plus there are computer labs, yes?

Everyone pays the technology fee so they have a right to use the computers, just maybe not the ones in the library for recreational purposes.

That's all I'm saying. Using a computer for 10 minutes is one thing, but when people are on all day. And I'm talking about less crowded times of day. Anytime I've been in there I've had to fight for a computer, when all I don't have is a printer, plus it's cheaper to use podium than stock up my own ink.

Agreed. I commute, and last semester I had a couple of days when I had fairly lengthy (3 or 4 hour) gaps between classes, and it was always near impossible to find a computer. I'm not just talking about during lunch time, but at various times of day on different days of the week. There is no reason to go on myspace/facebook or play games on a library computer.

I was also under the impression that upstairs computers were for library searches only. It is really annoying when I need a couple of minutes to find a book and the computers are all occupied for extended periods of time.

"There is no reason to go on myspace/facebook or play games on a library computer."

Aside from not being able to afford our own computers?

Who can afford what is not my concern. I am a poor college student just like a majority of people here. Facebook/myspace are not necessities. Library computers should be used for research/course-related activities, period.
