His flippant dismissal of you was out of line. As was his misuse of the word "hypochondriacs." Not all omnivores are like that, but I can see why we get a bad rep sometimes.
When it comes to my food allergies, I believe it is my responsibility to be entirely sure whether I can consume a product safely before doing so. Case in point, I was once offered "wheat beer" when someone heard I was allergic to barley. However, wheat beer is not brewed entirely from wheat, as some folks without sensitivities apparently think, but from barley and wheat. Also, "whey" and "casein" (among other tricky ingredients) essentially mean "cow's milk", another item I should avoid. When I was diagnosed with my various allergies, I researched long and hard so as not to have to rely on anyone not knowing such things, because they simply don't have to care in their every day life. If I didn't have to care, I wouldn't either. Don't we all have enough on our minds without having to take responsibility for an acquaintenance's health?
I do take responsibility for my health and my ideals.
And I wasn't really upset when I found out he'd neglected to list all the ingredients.
It was his attitude that he didn't have to name ingredients (when directly asked about them) because people with food issues are just hypochondriacs. That's what upset me.
