To Garden or Not to Garden

I'm trying to decide if I want to have a container garden on the balcony. Even if I get a job next week - realistically, I'm still here until next fall

i know my dad smokes while gardening and there hasn't been vegetables aversely affected in taste and smell, probably just hidden nicotine . And tobacco can be used as a pesticide somehow

The reason I worry about the smell is that when you step out on the balcony it stinks. Even under 2 feet of snow it stank and even after days of rain it stinks. But maybe lots of growing things will filter the air.
