ROAD TRIP!

I went to upstate New York this weekend, to see my parents and sister. It was lovely. The weather was dry and cool in the evenings, not too hot during the day. My new Yarrrrris performed admirably. I now have the Deathly Hallows on audio dvd, so I got to listen to that on the ride home ( Read more... )

Sounds like a great weekend! I've never actually been to a racetrack, maybe I'll have to try and tag along next year. ( c;

Oh, much fun indeed. A little more fun if you have some cash to blow, but it can be done on the cheap. They allow coolers, blankets, chairs, the works. It can be a bit of a drunk-fest some days (like free t-shirt day.) People watching is the best. So many freaks from all socio-economic strata. Kings and peasants, all there for one event, or rather, several events. I was struck at the wonder of a huge crowd focusing all of its attention and enthusiasm on a single event. It's an almost palpable force. Wild. When the horses reach that final furlong, and speed past the grandstand, thousands of fortunes, big and small, hinge on the next few seconds. Every eye is riveted to the horses, or the screens, and every voice is raised to spur on their chosen pony. It's powerful. Like the ocean. Once a year is fine for me, but I can see how it might be fun to make a career of it. Stupid, but fun.

Mmmmmmmm, cash to blow ... One day I will again have disposable income. ( c; I get what you're saying, crowd scenes like that can be wicked powerful. I usually find them a little overwhelming, but I enjoy them once in awhile.

I'm with you on the gambling thing, too. When I was initiated, at some point in junior high, we played for change. I, of course, lost all of mine. The point, however, was not lost on me. This is a game played for money. Some people put a lot of time, effort and intelligence into it. These are the ones who want me to bet my money. I do not want to put a lot of time, effort and intelligence into it. Therefore they are likely to take my money. No gambler, I.
