Meet the Cheetah

In my second installment of EVE related posts I'd like to introduce the Swollen Eyeball, a Cheetah class covert operation frigate. This has become my favorite ship, and probably the one I spend the most time in. Fast, nimble, and stealthy, when piloting one of these I can slip unseen through hostile or pirate infested space with near impunity. ( Read more... )

Cute. And beautiful!

What do you run EVE on? Its probably the only online game I've ever felt tempted by. Seeing your post I started wondering if it would run on Linus. It will definitely run on the Mythbuntu server if I ever get off my ass and build it!

I believe they've stopped putting out a native Linux client, but I understand it runs very well under Wine. There are many Linux geeks that play.

If you decide to try it out let me know either here or with an in game e-mail to my character named Byrr. I can help you out with some initial investment capital and also help you get over the learning curve. The interface is atypical, and takes some getting used to at first. When I first logged in I couldn't even figure out how to move at first. :)

Here's what Yahtzee has to say about EVE.

(Referring to the physical appearance creation portion of the game)
"... but the fact that your character never leaves their space ship makes it a
MASSIVE
WASTE
OF
TIME
but then if there were ever four words that completely summarized EVE these would certainly be they, with the runner up being
1. bored
2. bored
3. bored
4. eyestrain

Name one game (that's not Psychonauts) that Yahtzee didn't have something mean to say about. :)

Criticism is fair game for all things, but I think where he is an entertainer is the fact that he is funny when he is bashing, and not so much when he's praising, and that's why things are how they are. Also reference the Angry Video Game Nerd and the Nostalgia Critic.

I keep thinking I should give EVE a try...

How much player-killing is there? Is it a neverending-quest-based game (ie: everyone plays the same quests)?

There is a lot of PVP combat, but the majority takes place in what's called lowsec or zero space. In high-sec empire space nobody can fire on you unless you do something to invite it, such as steal from their loot containers. This excludes situations where you are in a player run corporation or alliance that is in an officially declared war, but these are not surprise situations ( ... )
