I re-read the Hobbit in anticipation of seeing the movie (great movie by the way). On the map of Erebor showing the moon letters in the line "When the thrush knocks...", the word "when" is mispelled. It it spelled HWEN. Every other word follows normal English usage, merely substituting Runes for English/Roman letters ( Read more... )

I hadn't actually remembered a mention of stone giants in the book, so ws very disappointed in the "addition" of the scene. A friend of mine who has read it far more often and recently than I said that giants were in there. I'm still disappointed in the scene. :-P The could have done without the silly "oh no, dwarves are trapped on the cliff, and on a leg,oh no!" schtick.

Other than that, excellent movie. Erebor was gorgeous. I'm looking forward to the Necromancer subplot being fleshed out, and while I was slightly disappointed to the casual portrayal of Radagast, I think it works. Just as Gandalf often subsumes himself in the harmless wanderer guise, I think that Radagast does as well. He certainly pulled out of it well enough to investigate Dul Goldur and persuade Gandalf he wasn't just eating mushrooms.
