TW - Children of Earth

Above the cut, I'll say that I enjoyed the story. 5 episodes gave them enough time to tell something fairly tight and focused yet with enough room to have a story with some substance to it.

The whole thing was like a giant fist in the stomach. Incredible, evocative writing, but... I'm still reeling from it all.

If this is the bitter end, it was done in such a way that makes you know the good guys won, but at a realistic cost.

If it isn't the bitter end, it will be interesting to see how everything is picked up - we may end up with the Jack who is slowly turning into the wise Face of Boe. Or we could end up with the slapass kiddie friendly hour that people across the pond say BBC wants Torchwood to be - less Jack and sans everyone who we started to care for. I dunno if I'd want to watch it, if it is the later scenario - I get my kiddie fix from Sarah Jane's Adventures.

And now I've gotta wonder about Luke and the other kids from SJA - this would've totally affected them. Where was Sarah Jane in all of this?

I too wonder how they could bring it back after this. My best scenario would be Gwen and Martha teamed up with Mickey and Jack coming back (at least some). Maybe cop Andy and Rhys as well. Perhaps Lois.

Or we could end up with the slapass kiddie friendly hour that people across the pond say BBC wants Torchwood to be - less Jack and sans everyone who we started to care for.

Shudders. That sounds horrible. I've heard two rumors: 1) an older one said they were going to do something with a lot less Jack; 2) new one says TW may come back if COE does well.

I've never seen SJA, so I'm no help there - sorry.

Very. That's why I'm going to wait to watch again.

To me, they did what good sf is supposed to do - really make you question a lot of things about your own world.

That really was quite something. The soldiers on the estate were horrible to watch, but I have a new found love for PC Andy. He was my hero in that moment. I actually cried at that.

The end felt like a let down, but I think I'm realising that it was supposed to be. The whole thing was a let down, because of the sacrifices that had to be made.

Hope they don't cop out and go soft on any forthcoming season. Woud be such a shame to backtrack. As has been said, you have the SJA for the kiddie market, DW for the inbetween, and TW has always supposed to be the grown up forum. Hopefully they will have the guts to stick with it.

PC Andy was great.

The whole thing was a let down, because of the sacrifices that had to be made.

I think you're right - that they kept it really realistic, and therefore, there's no way to have a truly happy ending. But for me, that's one of the reasons I liked it.

I too hope they don't do some kiddie show with TW.

I LOVED this! Just started watching on a lark (never got into Dr. Who...I know, I know, the sarcrilege! and had never seen previous seasons of Torchwood either), but was hooked from the get-go. Kept watching each episode thinking, ok, this is where the quality will start to go downhill, but it never happened. And they did not pull their punches either. All in all, very good TV.

This was some of the best storytelling TW had ever done, with a story that really meant something, so you picked a good time to watch! It did what good sf is supposed to - use a sf element to nonetheless show something about the world.
