Beware painkillers - of the common ones, codeine is great but habit-forming rapidly (not wanting any took me 3 days after 8), ibuprofen(neurophen) and aspirin both inhibit bone regrowth by around 20%, and paracetamol inhibits nerve regrowth (probably irrelevant for a toe).

Unless it's like a broken rib, where keeping moving and ignoring it is vital, toughing it out (interspersedwith the odd bottle of wine) is to be recommended. I also found the feeling of "painkiller worn off" first thing in the morning worse than the "normal" level. Look at my recent threads if you want references.

I got my cast off for a full Colles fracture in just under 6 weeks, and everyone says I did really well...
