Depending on where you are flying to, you may well need to be checked in before 0540. The tubes probably don't run that early, quite; you might do better to see if you can find somewhere to crash nearer the airport and then get a cab in the morning...

Tubes usually start at about 5 am... but it would take at least an hour on the tube... You should check the timings for the Heathrow Express from Paddington though.

A taxi from Kings Cross to Paddington would be feasible if the train times work.

The Heathrow express looks to be the best bet.

Only back to Edinburgh so I should be ok with an hours check in time.

That is the slowest loading website ever, plus it kept crashing out on me, thanks anyway.

It's government one - what do you expect?!

When I tried it it said go to Paddington and get the Heathrow Express getting in at 0540. Looks like there is one at 0510 and then at 0525 takes 15 mins - normally runs very punctually

The website probably only works for people who live in London ;)

Well if you came down on the Sunday night you could camp out at my place (which is about 15 minutes drive from the airport or about 20 minutes by tube).

According to this first and last trains document:

http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tube/downloads/pdf/firstandlast/piccadilly.pdf

...the first train goes through Hounslow East at 4:54 and reaches Heathrow at 5:06. You might want to check that though to make sure I haven't misread it. (And if you are going to Terminal 4 it will take longer because that's currently on a special bus route due to the Terminal 5 rebuilding).

That would be fantastic, thanks Jonny, I'll drop you an email to get your location details as I am down for the weekend.

Look foward to it.

Just to check (I'm about to make a note on my wallchart) we're talking about the evening of Sunday 2nd October and the morning of Monday 3rd October, right?

I definitely recommend the (taxi or nightbus) to Paddington, then Heathrow Express.
