The sun is hot today. Sophie turns her head to it and allows it to warm her face, smiling as it does. Italy agrees with her. She likes it here.
She leans back against the chair and licks at her gelato.
"We'll have to book our train tickets later for Heidelberg," Sky says as he chews on the stirrer from his coffee and stares at a large, unfolded pamphlet.
Sophie nods, though he can't see her. She's thinking of Greece, of her mother. Of home.
"Baby?" His eyes are concerned.
"Hmm?" She looks at him and finishes the gelato. "Oh, sure. Whatever you say."
"Where did you go just then?"
"Nowhere."
"Soph…"
"I was just thinking of home. I wonder how Mom's managing without us."
"Knowing Donna, she's got everything under control. She's got Sam."
Sophie looks away.

Germany is rainy. Sophie and Sky spend a lot of time indoors, touring various castles and museums. Sophie's sketchbook never leaves her hands. She's never felt so inspired. She'll have to replace this book with another soon.
They are sitting in an empty pew in St. Peter's Church, waiting out the rain. Sophie is sketching the figure of a woman bent in prayer. Sky is scribbling in a notebook.
"You know," Sky whispers. "We could always try a virtual tour on the website. We don't have to just show the villa…we can try to do some of the places around the island, really play up the attractions."
Sophie shades in the woman's shawl and looks up, smiling. "You miss it, don't you?"
Sky shrugs nonchalantly. "Can't wait to get to France. I've got a cousin in Lyon that we should look up."
Sophie's shoulders droop slightly. "When are we off?"
-
Sophie is enchanted with France. It seems like a place out of a fairytale. Sky seems to feel the same way. Though it's unspoken, they both mutually agree: they could be happy here.
Lyon and Dijon were exquisite, but Sophie can't contain her excitement about Paris. She's always loved her mother's stories and has always dreamt of experiencing it for herself. When they arrive in the city, it's everything Sophie has always hoped it would be. It's as if the city has come to life just for her.
"I don't know how to break this to you," Sophie says as they stand beneath the Eiffel Tower. "I think I'm in love."
Sky can only say, "Me too." They clutch each other's hands tightly. "Shall we set up a tent here and live on baguettes and French fries?"
Sophie laughs. "Yes! You know, I think Mom--" Sophie's voice hitches in her throat. "She, um, did the same thing when she was here. Minus the tent. I think she slept on a bench and got yelled at by the police"
He laughs. "We'll come back some day," Sky adds, curling an arm around her shoulder and hugging her tightly to his chest. "All of us."
"Promise?"
"Promise."

They have a ball in Amsterdam. They do everything their parents have told them not to, and the freedom makes them giggle like children at the end of the day when they're back in the hostel.
However, it's also when they're back in their hostel that they huddle around a cramped, sticky telephone and make expensive, static-ridden calls back home. Donna is thrilled to speak to them and Sophie can tell immediately that she's downplaying how much they miss her.
She knows her mother. Donna is the type of woman to pretend that she and Sam are getting along just fine without them for the sake of Sophie not feeling guilty about having left.
Even though Sophie knows this, she thinks it would be nice if Donna at least was honest and told her how much she was missed.
She cries that night, curled up in Sky's arms, and tells him that she misses home.

While they walk along the wet streets of London, Sky whispers, "We should talk. Make some plans."
Sophie looks at him, trying not to be alarmed by the tone of his voice. "Okay…"
"Maybe it's time."
"Time for what exactly?"
He rubs his hand over his chin, scratching at the stubble. "Time to go back home."
Sophie lets out an exaggerated sigh and then smacks him in the arm. "You scared me half to death!"
He chuckles. "What did you think I was going to say?"
"Well…I don't know. But you made it sound more serious than that."
"Isn't it serious, baby?"
She thinks about it and realizes he's right. "Yea. It is. I miss home."
He takes her hand and kisses her knuckles. "I know you do." They continue walking. "We had a good time though, didn't we?"
"We totally did."
"Should we go home before or after we go to Dublin?"
"Sky?"
"Yea, Soph?"
"The world will still be there. I want to see it all…just not all at once."
"Agreed. Let's go home."
