Lorelai settled into Alice's couch, listening as the blonde regaled her with tales of working in radio. She found herself laughing often and smiling more than she had in months.

She felt at ease.

As she heard the familiar, soothing whir of the coffee pot, she felt her phone vibrate in her pocket. With an exaggerated eye roll, Lorelai leaned over the arm of the couch and fished for the small phone in her tight jeans pocket.

"Ooh, making yourself comfortable already I see?" Alice said, leaning over the back of the couch as she watched Lorelai wriggle with an amused smile.

"I was comfortable alr-AAH!" Lorelai tumbled completely over the arm of the couch and landed in a heap on the floor behind her. She bumped her head and groaned and the vibrating phone, which had been finagled out of her pocket just as she lost her balance, skittered across the floor. It continued to buzz persistently.

Alice laughed helplessly. "You--ooh!--" She rushed to Lorelai's side and helped her up. "Are you okay?"

Lorelai frowned. "I think I may live. I can't speak for my ego though."

Alice smiled and blushed slightly, her nose coloring slightly pink. Lorelai found it impossibly endearing. "Nah, I still think you're pretty cute."

Lorelai found herself responding with a blush of her own. Since her morning coffee at The Planet, Lorelai had been the recipient of more flirtatious comments than she knew what to do with. She'd been surprised at first to be receiving such attention from a woman, but Alice had been entirely up front with her about her sexuality.

Lorelai, on the other hand, had not.

She wasn't misleading her, per se, but Lorelai found herself unable to reject Alice's flirtatious comments or touches. It made her feel good. It made her feel wanted. She couldn't remember the last time she received this sort of attention without baggage attached.

"Here, lemme just…" Alice grabbed the phone and handed it over. "Two missed calls."

Lorelai sighed, flipping the phone open. "My mother. Oh, and my daughter."

"Again? Didn't they call like three times each today?"

"Actually," Lorelai said, clicking her way to her call history, "Rory called four times and my mother called twice."

"Didn't you get about thirty other calls?" Alice asked, raising an eyebrow.

Lorelai frowned. Despite her love of exaggeration, this was one occasion where it did not apply because the number was an accurate guesstimate. "Ugh. You're right. I feel like a receptionist."

"Don't take this the wrong way," Alice said, "but isn't that why you came to California? To get away from all of that?" She waved her hand over the phone. "How can you enjoy your vacation if you're being pestered every five minutes?"

The brunette nodded. Lorelai would be enjoying California if she didn't have the constant distractions from Connecticut. Though the scenery was vastly different, Lorelai felt as though she were still firmly planted in the small New England town. Even while enjoying the remaining drops of coffee at The Planet with Alice, Lorelai had received seven phone calls: two from Sookie, one from Rory, one from Emily, two from Christopher, and one from Kirk. The rest of the day passed similarly. Clearly the concept of vacation did not translate to her family and friends.

Her phone beeped.

"Again!?" Alice shrieked.

Lorelai let out a huff of air. She opened the phone and read the text message. Mom, it's weird w/o you arnd. You don't belong out there. And who's this random woman?

Her finger hovered over the reply button but she snapped it shut instead. Who was to say that Lorelai didn't belong in LA or Paris or Antartica or Mars? She didn't know where she belonged. She knew Stars Hollow was home and yet, she found herself feeling more like Lorelai in this state than she did back home.

Alice eased herself off the couch and disappeared into the kitchen. Lorelai dropped the phone on the coffee table and leaned back against the comfortable cushions.

This was her time. Her vacation. Her weekend of freedom.

Why shouldn't she enjoy it?

"Here we are," Alice announced, slowly coming around the couch with two steaming cups of coffee. She sat down a little closer to Lorelai than she had before.

"Mmm…if there's anything that can make things better…" Lorelai accepted the mug and inhaled the rich java aroma.

"Now, if I remember correctly, you told Kit that you'd name a baby after her for bringing you coffee…" Alice teased her finger around the rim of the mug. "So what about me?" She smirked.

Lorelai blushed. She felt a hundred different witty comebacks on her tongue but couldn't bring herself to crack a joke. "I'm sure we could come up with something."

Alice grinned and set her mug aside. Scooting closer, the blonde eased Lorelai's mug from her hands and placed it beside her own. "I have a few ideas…"

Lorelai held her breath as Alice slowly leaned in and when she could feel Alice's breath hot on her face she closed her eyes.

The phone began to vibrate.

"You've GOT to be kidding me!" Alice cried. She slapped a hand over her forehead.

Lorelai groaned. She exhaled a sharp breath through her nose and opened her eyes. She looked at the phone and then looked at the beautiful woman sitting beside her. Of all the times to call…

She reached for the phone but before she could curl her fingers around it, Alice grabbed her hand.

"Maybe I'm outta line for saying this, but maybe you should ignore it." She glanced at the screen. "Could Taylor possibly have something that important to say right now that he can't say in a voicemail? Or in a day and a half when you get home?"

Lorelai grinned. Pulling her hand loose from Alice's, she grabbed the phone. She watched the other woman's face begin to fall while she flipped it open and made a show of quickly jabbing her finger on the little red button. "See? No more phone." She dropped it on the table. "Now, where were we?"

"Right here," Alice said, pressing her lips against Lorelai's in a soft kiss.

Lorelai decided that this vacation was one of the best ideas she'd had in a long time.
