Author's Note: This is my first time writing a Dexter fic so I am, as usual, a little nervous about characterization. I loved the tension between these two characters and was pretty excited to receive this request. And really…I don't know many people who actually watch this show, but seriously: check it out. It's amazing. (The show, I mean.) Let me know what you think! Enjoy!

Dexter is bent over his laptop, his fingers striking the keyboard, but his eyes are focused on the uncaged panther prowling on the other side of the window. Doakes throws a file at his desk and shoves his chair with such force that the lamp falls. Dexter imagines that he can hear glass breaking but he cannot, otherwise he would also hear the litany of curses and shouts coming from the sergeant's mouth. Doakes points at nothing, stalks back and forth, and flexes his fingers. The veins in his neck are distended and bulge against his flesh; the blood that flows beneath is likely molten and toxic. The anger radiates off of him like heat rays simmering over asphalt. It's tangible. It's a physical extension of its maker.
Dexter wonders what it must be like to be that angry, so unhinged that he is unable to stop himself from wreaking destruction on the things that surround him. Dexter does not have that luxury; the darkness within him must always remain hidden, his infrequent emotions always carefully contained. Doakes embodies everything that Dexter cannot. He is too controlled to be so reckless, to be so raw.
If he were sliced open and turned inside out, Dexter wonders if the Doakes-like passenger within him would be exposed.
For the briefest of moments, Doakes's eyes catch his own. A moment of recognition passes between them. The animal in Dexter regards the animal in Doakes. Dexter feels the tiger within him stir, paw against its cage, and settle into a restful sleep.
Unlike Doakes, Dexter knows when to unleash the animal within. His own careful self-preservation will ensure that he is the one to survive.
