Cheshire cats did not covet. They capriciously cajoled and cogently connived and curiously canoodled, but never coveted. Why ever would they?

But oh did the Cheshire cat covet - he’d never wanted anything as badly as he wanted that hat. It truly was a remarkable hat, despite its frayed edges, sooty smudges, and small, ember-eaten holes. It was not the most beautiful hat or the most vibrant hat or the most new hat.

But it was a good hat, the very best kind of hat. It had character; the Cheshire cat liked things with character. It had history. The damage it had sustained in the fire made it unique; it reminded its wearer that they had both survived something terrible. Its longevity allowed the wearer to believe that he or it could, in fact, survive anything.

The Cheshire cat did not believe in mortality or in the need for protection. Why would a vanishing cat need protecting? It was an aesthetic fascination, driven purely by the cat’s overwhelming urge to possess something as magnificent as himself. It was a rather handsome hat. It belonged on the head of someone (or something) equally handsome.

The Hatter had been handsome in his time, before the madness set in. The cat had nothing against the Hatter by any means; he was simply concerned with the hat’s best interests. Could a man at the mercy of mercury poisoning care for a hat so grand? The fire had not been his fault, but what of other careless moments that followed?

The cat-well, who could ever put a vanishing cat in harm’s way? He could keep the hat safe and match its bewitching grandeur.

One day, the Cheshire cat decided with a generous grin, the hat would be his and he would cherish it.

For now, he would surreptitiously covet that delicious specimen of a headpiece and patiently wait until it was his.
