Boys suck. Manny knows it. Emma knows it. It’s a fact that is mutually pondered while Emma dips her face into the warm crook of Manny’s throat and cries over a boy who well and truly sucks. Manny dutifully strokes Emma’s hair, pausing to scratch gently because she knows the soothing rake of her nails against Emma’s scalp always calms her down when she’s distraught. She doubts that any boy that Emma’s ever dated knows this little detail. It’s like a secret, something that is for Manny alone to know.
Manny knows that Emma is too precious to be truly appreciated by any of the insignificant boys that have fawned over her in the past. She’s been cheated on one too many times and has been hurt twice as much. As Emma’s hot breath skitters across Manny’s collarbone and her hot, fat tears roll down her bronzed flesh, Manny knows that no one will ever be able to give Emma what she can give her. No one else will ever be able to siphon away the pain with soft caresses and whispered words of support, love, and recompense.
Manny holds Emma more tightly and whispers that Damien, and any other boy for that matter, doesn’t deserve someone as pure and sweet and perfect as Emma. No one even comes close. Emma nods, disbelieving, and curls her arms tightly around Manny’s waist. She will not let go for hours, will stay here in the safety of her friend’s embrace until she feels like herself again, ready to tackle the world.
No one else can do this for Emma but Manny. Manny knows it. Emma knows it. Somewhere deep inside, unrecognized by both, is the truth that they will never truly give anyone else the chance to try. The one for all time will always be Manny.
