#01 - Motion
On nights like this, when Bea sits alone in the parlor, she wonders if Jack’s contentedness lies in constantly being in motion, or if he simply needs to be away from her.
#02 - Cool
Bea’s hands are always cold, a startling contrast to the heat of her skin when she lies beneath him.
#03 - Young
Bea claims that Evie’s youth is the reason why she’s bothered by the kiss she shared with Jack; she will never admit that she’s seething with jealousy.
#04 - Last
Bea will never forget Jack’s last words before he died: “I think it’s time that we talk about things, about us, when I get home tonight.”
#05 - Wrong
Beatrice sees him across the park, but she does not call out to him or reveal herself sitting in the shade of the oak tree; it feels wrong to watch him pass, but even love is not enough to forgive what he’s done.
#06 - Gentle
As he pretends to sleep on the sofa in his studio to avoid an upcoming appointment, Jack is startled to feel Bea’s soft touch against his brow as she brushes his hair aside and traces the line of his nose.
#07 - One
“Pen, I’m not that sort of man anymore-don’t you see that she’s the only one I give a damn about?”
#08 - Thousand
Jack never thought there was much to the saying that a picture’s worth a thousand words until he developed his wedding photo.
#09 - King
Lucy carefully places the paper mache crown on her brother’s head, declaring him king of the humble legion of toys they share.
#10 - Learn
Bea sips her tea and wonders if she will ever learn the secret to Evie’s openly loving affection.
#11 - Blur
The married couple sits together in the pew as they watch their daughter exchange vows with her husband-to-be, wondering how and when their lives passed in such a blur.
#12 - Wait
“Wait, darling….just wait,” Bea whispers breathlessly as she allows the full length of his hardness to stretch inside of her.
#13 - Change
Bea realized things had changed when Jack, perched upon her desk while he glanced over the newspaper, unwittingly unfastened the clip holding back her hair and lazily dragged his fingers through the long curls.
#14 - Command
“Take off your pants,” Beatrice commands, hiding a smirk at Jack’s expression of surprise.
#15 - Hold
When he can’t stand the ceaseless pacing any longer, Jack allows Evie to hold him in the corridor of the hospital while his wife’s life lies in the hands of surgeons.
#16 - Need
Bea is thankful for Jack’s calm, steady loyalty, but she cannot deny how much more she needs her sister.
#17 - Vision
“Forgive me for saying so, my dear brother, but you lack the proper vision for politics; your head should be behind a camera where it belongs.”
#18 - Attention
Evie knew she’d completely lost her sister’s focus when she noticed Bea’s pencil drawing a rough sketch of Jack Maddox’s face.
#19 - Soul
Evangeline’s heart shattered when Lucy crawled into her lap and asked if her parents’ souls were in heaven.
#20 - Picture
Despite the fact that Jack had given up film and photography for the sake of journalism and politics, he still insisted upon taking a photo of his wife and child every month to mark the progression of their beauty as they grew older.
#21 - Fool
“You’re a damned fool, Jack,” Penelope said with venomous alacrity, “if you let her go.”
#22 - Mad
“They call me Mad Lucy,” the child admits with a frown, adding, “why does our last name have to be Maddox if father no longer lives at home?”
#23 - Child
There are nights when Beatrice will slip out of bed and watch her daughter while she sleeps, silently praying that Lucy will never know what it’s like to grow up too fast.
#24 - Now
“Please, Jack, don’t make me wait any longer,” Beatrice whispers with urgency as her legs tighten around his hips.
#25 - Shadow
“In the war, we were scared of everything…scared of dying, scared of killing, scared even of our own shadows.”
#26 - Goodbye
Bea chokes back a sob and cries, “You can’t possibly know what it feels like to have been robbed of the chance to say goodbye!”
#27 - Hide
Bea busied herself in Jack’s appointment book as he left the studio for another date, wondering how much longer she would have to hide her disapproval-and her feelings for him.
#28 - Fortune
The day Beatrice Eliott walked into his studio, Jack Maddox knew he had become a very fortunate man indeed.
#29 - Safe
Dreams of the war plague Jack ceaselessly some nights; when he wakes, his brow drenched in a cold sweat, his arms are clenched around Bea’s waist and he feels an undeniable sense of security that he’s never known before.
#30 - Ghost
Bea wonders if all of the beautiful ghosts from Jack’s past will ever leave her alone.
#31 - Book
This time, when Jack slams the door shut behind him, the books rattle on the shelf and Lucy begins to cry.
#32 - Eye
The day after Bea and Jack sleep together for the first time, they cannot look each other in the eye without blushing.
#33 - Never
Beatrice will never tire of hearing Jack tell her that she’s beautiful (and she will never quite believe him, either).
#34 - Sing
Beatrice never did care much for the sound of her own voice when she sang, but she couldn’t deny her daughter the favored lullaby that allowed her to sleep soundly each night.
#35 - Sudden
Not for the first time, Beatrice wonders when Jack’s interest in politics will suddenly shift to something else.
#36 - Stop
“Stop!” Bea shouted loudly as her daughter raised the large pearl button to her mouth.
#37 - Time
Jack is really beginning to hate Berlin but he doesn’t dare return to London until time has stifled the ache he feels for Bea.
#38 - Wash
Beatrice stands silently in the doorway, watching with a smile as Lucy slaps her hands against the sudsy bath water, splashing Jack’s rolled up shirtsleeves.
#39 - Torn
It will take ages to repair the torn hem of her blouse, but Bea doesn’t care because Jack’s hands are pushing down her skirt and his mouth is on her throat.
#40 - History
“Bea, you have to understand…she and I have a history…I can’t make that disappear just because of your jealousy.”
#41 - Power
Evie always got a laugh when the papers displayed her sister as the perfectly subservient politician’s wife, all the while knowing who held the real power in their relationship.
#42 - Bother
Lucy stared out the window and wished her Aunt Evie hadn’t gone to Paris so she wouldn’t have to bother her parents in the middle of another quarrel.
#43 - God
Any faith Jack had in God was lost when he received the phone call that his wife and child had been killed.
#44 - Wall
The bedroom, Jack decided, was too far away, and so he pressed Beatrice against the wall in the foyer and lifted her dress.
#45 - Naked
Beatrice instantly recognized the look in Jack’s eye as he gazed at the woman across the room-he’d seen her nude, and he’d liked it.
#46 - Drive
The first time Beatrice drives a car (a little too fast and a little too nervewracking), she wonders if this queasy thrill is what love will be like.
#47 - Harm
Joseph silently vows to ensure that no harm will ever befall Beatrice Eliott again and therefore does not tell her that Jack has called every day for a week.
#48 - Precious
The first time Lucy smiles, Jack is cradling her in his arms; he’s thankful that she has inherited Bea’s crooked smile and endeavors to always keep it upon her face.
#49 - Hunger
Jack catches Bea’s eye across the crowded table and realizes that they share a hunger, not for the banquet, but for each other.
#50 - Believe
“I don’t believe a man like him could ever love a woman like me,” Bea admitted to her sister, hoping she had succeeded in hiding the disappointment in her voice.
