Author's Note: I know I probably could've gotten in a bit more snark with dialogue, but I was watching the movie recently and this idea popped into my head. It obviously takes place right before the movie begins. I hope I managed to do this character justice!

It gets really bloody irritating to be so underappreciated, thinks Emily Charlton. She taps one manicured finger against her desk as she waits for the interviewee to arrive and wonders what this Andrea Sachs will be like.
She knows one thing for sure: she's finally nabbed the first assistant position and she'll be damned if anything screws it up.
In reality, Emily has been doing the work of the first assistant for months and what thanks did she ever get for it?
None.
The former first assistant, Dominique, was abominable. Emily will never know what Miranda saw in her. She was never able to do what Emily did. Emily was her job; she still is. She lives, breathes, thinks, consumes Runway like its oxygen.
And rightfully so. You don't just become Miranda Priestly's right hand person by scraping along without a clue.
Dominique made the unfortunate habit of thinking too much about her own life. Idiotically, she decided to get engaged. Really, who has time for love when working at Runway? It's just as well that Emily has the superior capacity to separate work from her personal life.
Unfortunately for Dominique (and fortunately for Emily), she could not.
Working for Miranda Priestly has its perks. One of those perks is the free designer handouts that come simply by dropping Miranda's name.
Emily would never presume to use Miranda's name to her own benefit. Getting caught isn't worth the occasional three-thousand dollar dress.
Dominique…well, Dominique was selfish. Emily hated her down to her bleached-blonde roots and faux-French accent. While pawning her tasks to Emily, she spent her working hours planning her wedding and using every connection that Miranda had forged over the years.
It wasn't until Dominique used Miranda Priestly's name to obtain a very expensive, very free Vivienne Westwood wedding gown that Emily decided that she'd waited long enough.
Within the hour, Dominique was sacked and Emily was first assistant.
Emily's told each candidate interviewing for her former position that Dominique had been promoted. She's chosen to hold that nugget of knowledge to herself to save for an opportune moment. Should the junior assistant get out of line, overstep her bounds, or simply piss Emily off, she will enlighten them with the fact that it was she who got the previous assistant fired and that it will be she who remains to serve Miranda.
Whether Andrea Sachs gets hired or not, Emily will be the last assistant standing.
