Router, Wireless, and a Mac

I realize it isn't Ubuntu related, but I can't seem to find assistance in more appropriately named places.

I have a friend with a PPC iBook from 2004 era. He recently got DSL, but he has a large house and two computers--one on either side of the house. After consulting with the "technicians" in the area, we decided to get a D-LINK Rangebooster DIR-625.

Background:

The modem contains a wifi router. The router has two antennas and claims to be awesome for range, but is not powerful enough to reach his computer any more than the modem.

I set up the router and his computer properly. But, when he boots the computer, it takes (sometimes) upwards of 5 minutes to authenticate WEP. It's silly, really. Half the time, there isn't enough signal to connect at all. When he does get connected, his connection is very slow.

Does anyone know of any way to configure this device as a repeater or a particular configuration that will make it extend further?
