Today's case on Judge Judy:

Grandma hires Sally (25) to babysit her 5 year old grandson Timmy.
Grandma knows that Dean, Sally's boyfriend, is driving Sally over - he's her ride.

Grandma goes out for 5 hours.

Dean stays at the apartment and he and Timmy play with a remote-control helicopter. (No, this isn't going where you think it is.)

The fact that "Judge Judy" (as opposed to "Judge Reinhold") was ever actually a sitting judge somewhere has always been truly astonishing to me. The fact that she is presumably no longer one is cause for all of us to sleep a little easier at night. She's one of those completely nutty "I calls 'em like I sees 'em" types, who basically makes her mind up about everything in advance and then adapts reality after the fact, to suit her pre-made decisions. Worse yet, most of those decisions seem to have been based on knowledge about certain known facts about the way the world works that she has apparently extrapolated from a single, particularly unpleasant visit to the dry cleaners in 1962 ( ... )

I LOVE your sense of humor - the circa 1962...priceless.

I actually agree with JJ, although she should have explained her reasoning rather than insisting plaintiff count her blessings. Basically, there is no reason a functioning battery charger should get so hot that it causes a fire. That seems to indicate it was malfunctioning, which is further substantiated by the plaintiff wanting the receipt in order to sue the manufacturer. The analogy of the slingshot I think is offbase, because a slingshot is designed to fire projectiles, whereas the battery charger is not intended to cause flames.

Also, you don't have to give explicit permission for someone to be in your home - if there's a precedent that she's known that Dean was along with Sally in the house and was fine with it, she can't beef about him being over there that day if she didn't ever object to it.
