When Hikaru and Kaoru were young, they were fond of their maid. One night, the twins discovered the maid trying to steal from their mansion, and offered her a deal. She needed to correctly guess which is Hikaru in exchange for the combination to the safe. The maid took the combination number from them anyway and said that no one would ever be able to tell them apart. They eventually learned many skills from the maid, including how to fake emotions. The maid soon fled the mansion and never returned.
Hikaru and Kaoru were born as twins and spent all of their time together, only recently learning to open up and become friends with other people. Their mother is a wealthy fashion designer, whom both of them seem to take after in appearance, and have grown up to be much like her in personality and fashion skills as well. Their father on the other hand manages a computer software company and doesn't seem to resemble them at all. Mr. Hitachiin is refered to as a "ghost" because he is often not noticed and doesn't interact much with his sons and he is also very quiet.
As a child Hikaru grew up never being apart from his brother and they both became very codependent on each other. All through grade school he and his brother refused to accept anyone into their "world" if they couldn't tell the two twins apart as it upset them that no one could honestly do so.
They kept to themselves until Tamaki asked them to help him create the host club, though at first they refused, but eventually joined after Tamaki tried relentlessly to tell the two apart. Hikaru is now friends with everyone in the club, and is very protective of them. He seems to be easily upset by being reminded of his somewhat secluded childhood (other than being with his brother) and throws his emotions at people insensitively, since he is so used to being with just his brother. Like in the episode Operation Haruhi and Hikaru's first date he gets slapped by Haruhi, when being rude to her old friend, and he yells at her leading to him running to his room and Kaoru following him to see if he was alright.

Everyone was viewed as “toys” for the brothers to play with until they grew tired. They were bored rather quickly and would announce it without much care to who feelings they hurt or who they shut away. Their whole world was just the pair of them. The only one who they ever had let in their world prior was a maid of their family. She taught them not to trust others and how to put on a show so others wouldn’t know how they felt. It wasn’t until after Tamaki, the Host Club and Haruhi did their world ever expand.
They are “Little Devils” as dubbed by the Host Club. They are both selfish and rather blunt at times. Both of them favor art, and they have fun with their games of “Which one is Hikaru?” Hikaru is the older twin and plays out the “dominant” one of their twincest show. They are also very contrary. They haven’t put effort in letting others tell them apart, yet they are saddened when people guess wrong.
The differences between the brothers would lie in how Hikaru tends to favor standing to the left of his brother. Hikaru's tone of voice is about ten percent deeper than Kaoru's and he acts about ten percent more “devilish”. He’s more selfish and quite childish despite being older. He gets very jealous of others taking away what is special to him. Especially when it comes to the love interest he is clueless to know exists inside his heart.
When separated from his brother, he can only think of Kaoru. He tends to sulk and can be, as Haruhi described, rather destructive. He’s very loud and very unreasonable. Hikaru tends to throw tantrums like a five year old and will run off. He can be very rude, like what happened when Haruhi’s old friend admitted to once having a thing for Haruhi. Hikaru proceeded to make fun of him, and when he was scolded by Haruhi, he flounced out of the room to sulk, refusing to apologize for his behavior. He even ditched Haruhi on the date Kaoru set them up on with both of them clueless to the fact.
Despite his actions, Hikaru can be surprisingly mature. He is the older twin. He might be clueless to a lot of things, like his feelings or what is going on around him, but when needed he will come up with a solution for both himself and his brother. He was the one who came to realize, in the manga, that the twins do not need to cut off from one another to be individuals. That they can face the future together as a pair, something no one else can, and still can be different with their quirks and everything.

What was that idiot Lord’s game now? He was sure that he had to be at some place Kyouya’s family owned. The floating glowing mystical creature was a nice touch. He would have taken the time to grab at it, or even to look around but there was one tiny issue. Kaoru was no where to be seen. The worry was knotting within him. Maybe Kaoru was in on this scheme? The weight in his pocket from the SFC was going to go unnoticed as he circled the fountain, trying to recall any mention of a dome under the sea.
He reached for his phone, making an impatient clicking sound from his mouth as he pulled out the odd device. Wait. What kind of toy was this? Some how his phone was swapped for someone else’s from the looks of it. He flipped through the contact list, aiming to call the first name he saw, but the length of the list made him scroll down, wondering if there would be a name he recognized. First name he recognized was Haruhi’s. He was impatient to know what was going on and where his brother was, so he decided to call her first to get some answers and hope Kaoru is with her.
