The NYTimes had a neat article about residents of some very small towns up in NorCal (like, population 300 and such) banding together to fight the fires nearby because there just aren't enough firefighters statewide and they couldn't get any help. My favorite part? "Throughout the siege, firefighters have had to attend to medical emergencies unrelated to the fires. When he was off the mountain, Mr. Acker said he helped a woman who thought she was suffering a stroke. Instead, he said, she was having a strong reaction to a birthday cake laced with marijuana."
