In order to apply for my visa to work and live in China,I need to obtain a Visa Notification and a Work Permit for Aliens (doo doo doo doo do doooooo [that was X-Files music, clearly]) from my employer. I had to do the photo thing too for MExico- there's a couple reasons why they do it- mainly to be sure that you don't have peircings, etc. I definitely encourage you t oplan a couple days after your vaccines when you don't have to do much- either yellow fever or Hep made me very very ill, and I've heard from others who also needed a couple days to recover. Good luck with all the red tape!

The tetanus shot made it uncomfortable to sleep on my left side for several nights; I can only imagine what the Hep A will do. I'm not getting the yellow fever because I'm not in that zone, according to the CDC.

I have this irrational fear that the work permit police will read about my weird eye on the medical form and see my picture and reject my imperfect self. I suppose I should be worried about something rational, like dying of smog inhalation while in China...

To be honest, I've read that part of the reason they ask for the photo is because most asian schools prefer to hire caucasian teachers, because of a perception on the students' part that they aren't getting the 'real american' experience if their class is tuaght by an asian-american. You're still around-eyed barbarian, even if one of the eyes in question is non-traditional...
