Although I got pulled over coming home from work at 2 AM about a month ago... 51 in a 40... and he just let me go. Similar situation. Could've been more of the same... looking for that DUI who clearly wasn't me. My record is also clean... however I did know that the car was registered to me. :-)

It really just depends on the jurisdiction and the officer you come in contact with. From the guys I have worked with it really boils down on how you come across to them. Being honest with them and not being standoffish is definitely going to help you out. Having them be in a good mood that day is always a plus too. Although, if you get stuck in an area where they are doing a zero-tolerance type of thing, then you are pretty much SOL; we have a couple of those right not because of a couple of fatal accidents.
Although carrying the proper creds will usually help you out all the time.
