Have you tried decongestants? If it is just from congestion and/or allergies that should help. If it is an infection, pitch a fit till the doc sees you -- give them the you are in school and can't afford to not concentrate due to an ear infection so they need to get you in ASAP!
No matter what I do, I've found that ear infections are very hard to shake quickly without a little help from the family doc. Warm compress or a cup of (not too hot) tea held near the ear usually helps me get more comfortable. I also try to drink cold care or breathe easy herbal teas to help ease the congestion. I don't know how you react to decongestants, but I've found that most adults only need 1/2 the regular dose of sudafed (1 not 2 pills) to feel better w/out feeling too dried out or wired.
My inner Italian mother wants to come make you some soup and tea! (((hugs))) Please take good care of yourself.
I'll be okay soon. It only hurts when I breath.;) I haven't had one of these since high school. Fortunately it's only one ear or I would have gone to the doc. I wouldn't be able to hear if it were both ears!
Are you practicing yogic breathing to minimize the pain? :-)
I started getting ear infections when I developed allergies; one of my ears kept popping like popcorn, it almost drove me nuts till a doc identified allergies, gave me some Claritin and sent me to an allergist. I had to change insurance companies to get it treated, Kaiser Permanente's ear doc said it was an muscle spasm and they could cut the nerve to make it stop, but it could result is some facial paralysis. (!!) When they told me it would take 3 months to get a second opinion, I switched to non-HMO insurance. Yikes!
But seriously, sooner is always better than later for getting these things checked out! Pretty please. I guess you could try massive amounts of food based antibiotics (garlic...) or eat some factory farmed meat (mmm Cipro).

Once I borrowed a line from Mel Brooks' "Silent Movie" (spoken by Sid Ceasar as a hospital patient) when a doctor asked me how I felt: "I'm fine except for the constant pain."
