"How can you say rap isnt music? Music is a vocal or instrumental sound(s) possessing a degree of melody, harmony, or rythym. Rap music possesses all of the qualities above. Rap, obviously, is not a waste of time since the majority of compact discs/tapes purchased in the United States, according to the Recording Industry Association of America, is ( Read more... )

there is only one way that rap can be considered music, and that is by the three classifications of music: Art music, Popular music, and tribal music. The lines are a bit blurred as a lot of popular music (particularly the underground scene) is filled with musicians that are making more of an artistic expression rather than commercialized garbage designed to placate the masses. On the other end of the spectrum, rap is tribal music that is borderline popular ( ... )

Gay Marriage anonymous February 10 2004, 08:12:01 UTC
I was behind you on almost everything in that post. I would really like you to explain why you think allowing gay marriage would cheapen the institution. If two people love eachother and are faithful to one another, that's all that marriage requires. I think that the divorce rate in this country cheapens marriage far more than gay marriage would. I would rather see a wedding between two men or two women who love eachother and will support eachother for the rest of their lives than between a man and a woman with a pre-nuptual agreement, thinking that if it doesn't work out they can always have it undone.
Love always,

Marriage as an institution has been severely cheapened by divorce, I'm in total agreement with you, and divorce is one of the biggest problems in the United States today. Two parents' irresponsiblity leads to traums mostly to the children involved and the family system in the United States is drastically weakened by divorce. Marriage is no longer a committment, but a convenience ( ... )

"Speaking of the family system, for millenia, the family system has been built of a patriarch and a matriarch, each with distinct responsiblities in that family system."

This isn't even true. If you look at the ancient Greeks, or the Japanese, or many other societies in history, these distinct responsibilities do not exist. Yes, today in conservative America this "responsibilities" are viewed by some people as important.
What do you see them to be? The father as the provider and the mother as the nurturer? I simply don't see how mixing or combining these "roles", if the necessary components are all there, is a problem. These views you have are absolutely medieval. In fact, we have been discussing these "roles" in my Medieval Narratives class.
Can't men nurture? Can't women discipline? I really really really really really have a hard time believing that you truly believe that a man and a woman can't switch roles in raising a child.

I was pointing those out as two of the predominant roles that men and women respectively have, not their only roles. Of course fathers are capable of nurturing and I've been disciplined by my mom many a time, but a child needs a MALE and a FEMALE role model, and despite the switched characteristics that gay couples may attempt to emulate, true characterstics are not present.
In regards to historical family systems, ancient Hebrew and Egyptian family systems, dating back thousands of years before Greek or Roman cultures, were comprised of patriarcial and matriarchial balances. One might, therefore, say that medieval family systems were deviations from the natural state of things. It is proven, however, that in the majority of cases, children are better off having a MOTHER and a FATHER, not a father and a father.

I disagree with you on the abortion thing. I'm pro choice. That's really just because i don't care when anyone dies. Whether it be a serial killer or an innocent child, I say let em die. I won't miss them if i never met them. That is all. -Rob
