Title: “Jack and Sawyer Go To Dollywood" (Part 1 of 2?)
Author:
uhzoomzip
Summary: Um, see the title?  That's pretty much it.
Author's Notes: So long lines give fanfic writers lots of time to plan fics.
holycitygirl suggested we write a 'Jack and Sawyer go to Dollywood' story and how could I resist?  Lee hasn't seen this yet, so I'm hoping she's still inspired to write Part 2! *fingers crossed*  Hope I didn't write you into a corner, babe!

“’Maters and Taters’? Jack seems amazed to see Sawyer order both at the simply-but-appropriately-named food stand.

“Yep,” Sawyer says, heading to a table he sees people vacating nearby. “If you insist on dragging me to Dollywood, of all places, I’m going to have to appease myself with food.”

“It’s 11:00 in the morning, Sawyer!”  Jack looks horrified.

Sawyer just shrugs. “Don’t see as it matters much ‘round here.”

Jack cringes as Sawyer shovels in the fried green tomatoes, stopping only to alternate with bites of fried potatoes covered with onions, peppers, cheese and chili. “That’s it; we’re getting your cholesterol checked when we get back to LA.”

“I’m bored.”

Sawyer knows he’s irritating Jack with the statement he insists on repeating every few minutes as they slowly snake their way through the queue to the boarding area of the roller coaster.

“If you don’t want to wait in line, we could see a show.” Sawyer just stares in bewilderment as Jack flips over the map. “Hey, how about this one? Heartsong - ‘a unique multi-sensory musical film experience in which you will share with Dolly Parton a lifetime of her Smoky Mountain inspiration.’ That sounds like fun.”

“You’ve got to be shittin’ me Jack. That sounds awful. Why in the hell would you want to sit through that when there’s roller coasters to be ridin’?”

“Like what - the scary mine ride?”  Jack rolls his eyes.

“It’s the Mystery Mine Ride and there’s an 85 foot, 95 degree angle drop.” Sawyer has grabbed the map from Jack and points emphatically, before raising his eyebrows and flashing a grin, “‘Course it doesn’t sound half as scary as Heartsong!”

“Ha ha ha - there it is!” Jack finds it and points, laughing uncontrollably.  Craning around to see what’s so funny, Sawyer’s eyes narrow as he sees why Jack is laughing.  The picture taken of them on the main drop of the roller coaster shows Jack’s mouth wide open and Sawyer attempting to put his arms in the air, but encumbered by the harness that goes over the shoulders.  Instead, he looks like he has his hands up in surrender.

“You’ve got baby jazz hands!” Jack is still laughing, wiping tears from his eyes, that bastard.

“Well, you don’t look so manly yourself, screaming like a girl… what are you doing? Those pictures are $15!” Sawyer indignance is tempered with irritation when he sees Jack pulling out his wallet.

“A bargain - I’d pay twice that.”  He happily hands over the money to the clerk and walks away with the photo.  Sawyer reluctantly follows, grumbling the whole time.

“You are so lame.”

It’s the hottest part of the day and the sun is blazing down and instead of cooling off on Blazing Fury or Daredevil Falls, Jack is on the hunt for Dolly’s Tennessee Mountain home.

Jack studies the map like he’s seen him study patient charts at home. “This map can’t possibly be correct.  It says it’s past Apple Jack’s, but I don’t see it anywhere.”

“It’s not even her real house - it’s a replica!  Why are you dead-set on finding it?”  Sawyer asks, more than a little irritated.

“I want to see her coat of many colors.”  Jack says sheepishly.

Sawyer’s eyes widen and his jaw drops, unable to contain his shock.  “WHAT?”

“You know, from the song, the one her mother made for her and the other kids laughed at.”  Suddenly, Jack’s looking a bit flushed and Sawyer doesn’t think it’s from the sun.

“Why do you want to see that?”  Sawyer is perplexed.

Jack shrugs, embarrassed. “I remember hearing that song when I was little and thinking how nice it would be to have a mom that would make you a coat like that.  And it was like she knew it was special, and she didn’t let those other kids take that away from her.”

Suddenly, everything clicks in Sawyer’s mind - why Jack was so intent on coming here, why he wants to do all the cheesy things he never got to do as a kid.  His childhood may have been privileged, but he was lacking in so many other ways.  He leans in and kisses him softly, surprising Jack, who just smiles at him, a questioning look on his face.

Sawyer takes the map and studies it, starting to walk towards his destination.  “I think the Mountain Home is this way.  And if you quit draggin' your feet, we can probably make the 3:30 showing of Heartsong.”

The beaming smile Jack gives him makes it all worthwhile.
