In order to further our feeling that we're participating in a meaningful democracy, 10 Downing Street now has a website section where you can petition the Prime Minister. Yay British democracy!

It serves to turn a visible demonstration of protest into something that can be happily deleted at the press of a button without the press getting a single picture to embarass the government with, I thought.

I doubt its existence is going to stop people from organizing or attending protests, though.

And I'd really like to see Blair standing on his head and juggling ice cream.

True. But it's a total waste of time either way. Downing Street sees umpteen petitions every year and it's very rare that anything comes of them even if delivered in person. These will all just be easier to dismiss, consigned to an electric bin without even getting so much as a polite reception from a lackey.
