I swear by kamillosan for everything - bottoms, nipples, chapped lips. It helps to have clearly labelled tubes for bum use though unless you REALLY trust your co-users' tube hygiene...
Washing the bottom (rather than wiping it with a wet-wipe) using cold chamomile tea might help too. And, as others have said, drying.
It really depends how it is. When we had really bad nappy rash the only thing that cleared it was anti fungal, steroidal cream from the GP combined with using metanium. Once the rash was under control a thick layer of vaseline worked wonders.
it just looks... red and scalded, in a contact kind of rash way. Admittedly, frequent changes and reapplying of sudocrem has been making an improvement this morning. Certainly the worst bits were looking less raw, and the rash had retreated away from under his scrotum.
Alex sometimes used to get horrid nappy rash with raw, weeping patches when he was ill and/or teething.
We'd wash him down with cool water and let it dry completely and then hope that with sudocream and frequent changing it would clear up. It usually did within a couple of days.
When we could we'd ahve nappy free time but that wasn't always possible.
Nappy rash with teething is very very common. In fact its the only time I really see it occur in 20 odd years of looking after children. The nappies have a distinctive smell as well.
Firstly try something like Bepanthen (Sp!!) or Metanium with a layer of Sudocrem over the top to stop it rubbing off.
However if your baby has had nappy rash for more than 3 days (3 days is my general rule of thumb) then it is more than likely infected with thrush and needs a doctors prescription for something with some antibiotic / antifungal in it - like Timodine or Dakatarin / Dakacort. My doctor also prescribes Morhulian (Sp!) cream and with those the nappy rash should quickly go away. Yes you could try everything else but it could take weeks.
Like I said its very normal and I would strongly recommend you get something from the doctor!
we are looking at day two here and starting to gain ground on it (less of his bottom is red). I picked up Bepanthen basically because its what I could get locally. So now militantly drying his bottom at every change and slathering that on as an alternative to the sudocrem for now. But will combine the two if I have to. My parents swore by thovaline because its china clay based and nothing gets through it to the skin, but its prescription only. Hoping to have stopped the march before it gets far enough to need a script, but we can but see.
yeah, wipes it is. Cotton wool is great, but takes longer and he cannot stay still for long enough, especially when you have so much to clean off. Definitely drying his bum now.
Facecloths or cut up muslins are much more effective than cotton wool, which takes ages and can often just spread stuff around, IME. Of course, then you have to wash them.
