Q for Saiyuki peeps

What the dilly is up with Sanzo's chest-piece? It's not exactly a rakusu. Is is supposed to be like armor? (But then why are they little pieces all dangly?)

Also, what's it made of? I'd always assumed the little dangly pieces were wood, but apparently other people think they're metal?

I've always thought it was.. huh. I have idea, but I always pictured them as being wood instead of metal because they just don't look like metal (which can be said for many things not limited to and including shitty bands)
