So, a 6km tailback at Newry today eh?

Jim Larkin must be spinning in his grave.

There was a full turn out were I was. Nobody traveled to Newry except the guy who lives there.

I can't speak for those who did travel north without either picketing or working. I know I wouldn't be pleased with anyone I knew if they did that.

But...I don't believe all those people were public servants. Schools and Colleges are closed, so many parents would have stayed out of work to mind their children. Many Undergrads can drive too.

Anyway, most picketers were on shifts, so I see no reason why they shouldn't head out shopping after their shift ends. They didn't get any pay that day. Even the Union members providing emergency cover don't get paid. They are still officially on strike.

Probably not good for the economy to go north to shop though.

That was kind of my point as well. When you look back on previous strikes it's all about hardship. Hardship for the employers who lose productivity and hardship for the employees who lose out on their wages.

I'm guessing the govt. today were largely thinking "Great, there's 0.5% off our wage bill for the year".

IMO, This strike achieved nothing.

This, and the one next week, can be judged on budget day.

This was on the AA road watch website yesterday

From the AA roadwatch website. Updated: 24/11/2009 11:07:04
*MAIN
TRAFFIC* *A1/DOWN* The PSNI are dealing with a crash just north of the
border on the A1. Closer to Newry there are reports of up to 6km
tailbacks on the A1 into Newry

Don't believe all you hear on the news.
