When his week off had passed and it was monday morning again Sean couldn’t deny that he was quite eager to get back to work. Not that his week had been anywhere near as dreadful as he had anticipated, his impromptu visit to Viggo leaving him feeling something close to rejuvenated. And instead of waking up with the hangover he had expected after drinking a few too many beers, he’d woken up feeling inspired, the following week had flown by as he had been writing almost frantically. And where his earlier novels had contained some personal elements, his current work was almost entirely based on personal experience and, unlike the fretting he had done on previous occasions, that knowledge didn’t phase him at all.

But now as he entered the school building his work was the only thing he could think about. He was looking forward to teaching again, interacting with his colleagues, working on the play and seeing Viggo again. All of those in no particular order, of course. He passed principal Lee’s office on his way to class, and glanced inside as he caught phrases like ‘standards that needed to be upheld’, ‘school funding’ and ‘external donations’. Those all too familiar words combined with spotting a figure wearing a shirt that read ‘war is not the answer’ on the back told Sean that Viggo, once again, appeared to be in some kind of trouble. He made a mental note to ask Viggo what he had done this time to envoke Christopher Lee’s favorite little speech. Again.

He didn’t give it any thought until lunch time, he had just treated his students to a pop quiz, something he was known to do after every vacation, a way to get them on track or just piss them off a little, and even though there had been some obligatory protests he knew that none of them had been truly surprised by it. It was almost a tradition, really.

When he entered the teacher’s loung he immediately noticed the buzz that seemed to go through the room. Not that he could have missed it anyways as John’s loud voice was the first thing he heard upon entering.

“Be that as it may, Hugo, I still think other factors could, and should have been taken into consideration.

Sean made his way to the water heater, not that he wasn’t curious as to what was going on, but not so much that he’d forego his afternoon tea.

“What other factors, John? Don’t tell me you didn’t see this coming?” Hugo asked, ignoring John’s grumbled response as he added, “Because we all did, I think even Viggo did. The only question was when and how, really.”

Sean forgot about his tea momentarily at hearing Viggo’s name. His thoughts immediately flew back to that morning when he’d passed Christopher’s office.

“No one’s going to deny that, Hugo. I suppose what John’s trying to say, and I think it’s something we can all agree on that it’s a damn shame to loose him. A lousy teacher? Definitely. But one very fine human being.”

Sean absently noted that Ian emphasized the word fine and he thought that perhaps McKellan fancied Viggo or something. But all he could really think of was that Viggo, as far as he could tell, had been fired. And that he was gone.

“Where is he?” He heard himself ask, and that was really all he wanted to know. He winced a little at hearing the strained sound that was his own voice.

Ian gave him a surprised look, and then shrugged, something Sean couldn’t remember Ian doing before and perhaps that explained the oddness of said gesture. Ian simply wasn’t the man that would shrug. “He packed his belongings during first period and then left.”

Home. Sean knew he couldn’t just leave right away, but he couldn’t deny wanting to do it any way. He didn’t allow himself to dwell on why he was reacting so strongly to the news of Viggo’s dismissal. Perhaps it was because he thought that for the first time in what seemed like years, he’d felt like he had connected with someone again. And loosing that connection so soon didn’t even surprise him all that much, that was usually happened when things started looking up for him.

He decided to forget about the tea, he needed a smoke instead and he was just about to step outside to have a quick cigarette when Ian called out his name.

“Yeah?” He turned his head towards Ian as he searched his pockets for his cigarettes.

“Christopher asked me to tell you that Viggo’s students will be joining your class until a suitable replacement is found.”

And that didn’t surprise him either, nor the fact that he seemed to be all out of smokes.
