that's such an awesome song. it's a shame it's got so many connotations nowadays that you can't sing it or talk about it without people assuming you're trying to make some sort of hidden point.
it really is such a happy song. of course, it's also pretty depressing considering the rest of the play.
You know, 50% of our current town is populated by Mexican immigrants, most of whom are named Maria. So I am always singing, "I just met a girl named Mariiiiaaa." Suddenly that name will never be the same to me. (In other news, LaToya is living with us, and I still haven't mailed Aiden's present. Hope y'all are doing well.) Rock on -- Janelle
Yes, it is a happy song- and, as you put it, pretty depressing as well. That's what I love so much about this song and some of the others from West Side Story- so many of them are so happy, so peaceful, so hopeful- and then it all goes down in a flaming wreck when the rumble between the Sharks and the Jets goes a bit too far. If only Riff and Bernardo had kept it a fair fight, everything would have been great- but things just happened, and from that point on, everything got worse. It's so depressing hearing this song as part of the musical, because when you hear it, although Maria is blissfully unaware, the viewer knows that her brother was just killed by her boyfriend-to-be. So on one hand, the audience is happy that Maria feels so pretty- but then they realize that it doesn't matter, because once she finds out the truth, all of that happiness will be gone
( ... )
Eh, it doesn't, really- that's just the header that I always put when I'm feeling really good. I was in My Fair Lady several years ago, and that was the line that I found best describes unadulterated happiness. See what I mean?
