I'm not a hundred percent sure, but my guess would be it has something to do with the monitor. The XP seems convinced your monitor isn't good enough. Maybe try loading with an old monitor, and plugging in the new one? *is pretty illiterate when it comes to hardware*

That's my suggestion...

Hope it all works out for you though! Computers suck.

If the book was invented AFTER the computer, we would think it was revolutionary!

You can force a boot to safe mode by pressing the F8 key during the start-up phase of the PC. Turn on the PC and repeatedly press F8 until you get a menu up.

It sounds like a video driver issue. What video card have you got?

Whether its Nvidia or ATI, you should be able to download the latest drivers from the web.

If you've reinstalled the OS make sure you patch it fully with service pack 2 and any updates from the MS website.

Incidentally, why didn't Vista work - was it drivers?

I think I'll go hide under the living room rug.

I have a number of PCs in various states of repair/disrepair so I've picked some science to fill in the gaps before I start swearing and hitting them

I too was going to say F8. There are non destructive ways to sort it (system restore for example). Do you have a Win Xp disc as you could boot from that and reinstall XP without having to format everything?

Having had wall to wall computer issues over the years I always make sure I have a fairly recent back up and I make sure I have everything backed up just before I do anything OS based. Bitter experience has carved that into my brain...

I don't think System restore would work. I did not create a restore point before I farted about. Once it happened I tried to roll back the driver but it wqas no longer available for some reason! All up and working again nw though so alls well that ends well. Cheers for the ideas buddy!

Good stuff. Usually Windows will make random restore points intermittently unless you turn them off. Although it may vary, but I'm sure mine makes the odd update without me asking for it...

System Restore helped last night. Was reinstalking all my programs and was working fine for about 3 hours then started crashing again! Think a driver somehow got corrupted. I have no idea how! But system restore sorted it out! Working fine at the mo. Fingers crossed it stays that way!
