Roomate needed!

Mar 22, 2009 13:42

I've just run out of possible options for people to move into my current 3-bedroom apartment in Waltham to replace my current roommates. I was really hoping not to move, and I like my current place, but I can't reasonably stay there by myself. All the people who I've asked about it have had good reasons for not wanting to move in, most commonly "I ( Read more... )

Move to Cambridge / Somerville / Medford. I have a friend who's a first year pharmacology grad student at the Boston Tufts campus who just signed a lease for a 3 bedroom place in Meford (a short walk from Davis Square), i.e. she needs roommates badly. She's an avid sci fi reader with an incredible library. I'm not sure your personalities would mesh well but it can't hurt to meet her once (and if you want nothing more to do with her ever, I certainly won't take it personally). I've been trying to get her connected to Boston's poly group because she's looking for kinky geeks and Nyren has suggested she try that; it would certainly be safer than what she's doing now. While she's addicted to sex (she has low self esteem), she's not into drinking, she can't stand smokers and she's more studious than I am (and did I mention she loves to read sci fi?). I'm also hoping if you move closer I'd see you more often.

You should introduce her to me (ultimatepsi can probably second this), and for bonus points we're probably already almost neighbors as I am just on the medford side of the davis-tufts axis. Oooo, and if ultimatepsi did move in there she too would be just about neighbors to me.

Wha? Who wants to live in Cambridge/Somerville, so far away from where all the action is at?

Seriously, I know people are addicted to being on public transit, but I've never seen the appeal of living in a cramped, undermaintained, crowded neighborhood when the same money gets such a nice place in Waltham or Watertown, which does have some measurably public transit.

Then again, I've almost always had a car.

I thought she made clear that she likes Waltham just fine, it's just that she has been unable to find appropriate new roommate(s) there. Yes, one really does get more for the money in Waltham/Watertown than Somerville, as long as you have a car, although I myself have mostly enjoyed all the places I've lived around Boston (Belmont, Watertown, Brighton 3x, west Somerville 2x, Medford 2x-- the only place I didn't like much was on Winter Hill).

I'm perfectly happy in Waltham, and I like being able to walk to a forest, but I living alone isn't worth it.

I think the car vs public transit thing is a huge part of it.

Also, a lot of folks seem to disagree with you about the "where the action is"

Oh, I know. I was being facetious with the action comment. That said, I find plenty of things to do that don't take me into the city, so I know there's also plenty of action out at 128.

I agree with you that living alone isn't worth it. (If nothing else, then you have no one else to blame for the dishes in the sink? Kidding.)

I wish I had useful answers to your dilemma instead of just snarky comments, but I'm stuck out in Framingham at the moment, so you might not want to be taking housing advice from me anyhow...

fiddledragon and I are potentially interested, although the logistics would be a bit odd - our lease goes through July, and I don't think it would be sane for us to try to move before Concertino. If we were to move in with you, it wouldn't be until late July, and we'd need to take a look at the place and make sure that the space meets our needs (and we'd need to do that in the next few days, it looks like).

Another possibility would be for you to move into our living room when your lease expires, and after Concertino we could look for a new place together (although this doesn't help on the "not wanting to move" front).

And, see, I totally missed this bit until just now:

I do have a pair of people who I could live with for the summer and then move around the start of September

So I suppose it wouldn't have to be as odd as all that. Let's be in touch in the very near future.
