We had a class discussion today, where for over an hour, we had panel (composed of people playing roles of real-life experts and respected individuals) covering the topic of gay marriage

First of all, I'm sure he meant "The Catholic religion states..." not "Catholics believe..."
Second, I'm pretty sure what the kid that asked about raping kids dumbass was probably refering to the number of cases where priests have raped their alter boys. But yes, he is a dumbass. I don't think there is ANY religion (with the possible exception of maybe Satanism, I guess) that states it is okay to rape small children and I think he was completely out of line when he said that.
Third, well, I'm not too sure if they really all just put up that wall. They were probably just embarrassed because they said all these things without knowing that there was a Catholic in the room. But what you SHOULD have said was, "I'm Catholic, AND I DON'T rape children!" hehe :-D
By the way, what the hell kind of class is this anyway?! lol
This is actually a gender in communication class. But we have some rather...well...opinionated young men and women that don't seem to be entirely educated...well, maybe they just get swept away in the "fun" of ultra-feminism that rages through the class at times. Don't get me wrong, I'm a feminist too...but when feminism turns into discrimination, I can't stand by it.
I know what you're going through in kind of a role reversal with the wall. In a predominately conservative Catholic student body, it is hard to be a liberal Protestant dissenter. Way to stand up for your beliefs though! That is a way to know how strong your personal faith is

Thanks Roxy...and actually, yes, unfortunately, we do have a large number of people in that class that truly DO think and act in this manner...I really feel sorry for that. I don't want to associate myself with that. I study with a Methodist Bible study, and I'm Catholic...and have been raised around protestants my whole life...so I guess maybe I just have a 1-up on them as far as understanding their religions more than they may understand mine...but it truly did bother me that people who previously nodded their head and agreed, sometimes even clapped at some of my comments were suddenly...well...SCOFFING at me. Oh well. People are going to be what they are going to be.
Yeah... I agree with her, Catholics in general seem like "good" people to me. I mean, I've never EVER been bothered by someone who was Catholic about what religion I have chosen for myself. They are always just interested in being good to everyone they meet. Must be something they teach in the Church that other faiths seem to neglect more and more these days. (That wasn't an insult to other faiths as much as it was meant as an eye opener to people who claim to be Christian, yet the ONLY priority they have is to Christ. They have no concern for others, unless you are "going to hell"... in which case they try to get YOU to be like them...)
In any case, your classmates were just WRONG to do that to you, and I pity them. They are probably never going to accomplish much in life, and they probably will never know the joys of just being nice to people. And in their next lives, they will have accumulated a lot of bad karma from ostracizing people in this way.
