Angels are creatures of light, spirit, and divine intent, and by most accounts, they have no set physical form. Their apperance to us depends on how we care to see them, or more often, how they care for us to see them. Plus, many manifestations are described as having more a single pair of wings- sometimes, many more...

The author of Angels in America had a great interview on NPR's Fresh Air, where he talked a fair bit about angles and how we've seen them over time. It's a bit trippy, really...

How we see the world, after a century+ of pop cultural detritus, is very, very different from how the world was seen millenia ago. S'like how could anything possibly fly, if it didn't have wings? Even our view of what angels are and what they do has changed considerably- we like to think of them being benevolent humanoids with wings, but they are the Creator's Passion and Spirit made Manifest. They are nothing like us in intent, purpose, or desires, and what they do is all part of God's plan- hopefully.
