We'll have the collective will for a Mars mission when one of two things happens. The unlikely reason would be the discovery of some resource on Mars valuable enough to spur us to go there, and I have no idea what that would be that you couldn't get somewhere in the Belt more easily. And the more probable reason would be a serious competitor in the space race, probably China.

But despite what they might say, from what I've read the Chinese are a long way from a manned mission to the Moon, much less to Mars. So it may be a while.

Because you're totally right. Its not a technological barrier. With Zubrin's "live off the land" plan we could pretty much go right now with a little time and a lot of funding. But no one really seems that motivated at the moment.

Yeah, we'd definitely need to see some kind of return on any investment we made.

Remember i was from the Mars? :) I will take you there once my spaceship is fixed.

Since there are 15 opportunities each day to see the Sun rise and set, then, can we say we will be 15 times elder by Mars time than our present age by Earth time? then i will be...hehe..hundreds of years old now.
