OT: solely on your recommendation, I read "homicide: a year on the killing streets". I normally don't like true crime, but that was some well written journalism. I felt prepared enough to look at "the wire", and am now on season 1, episode 7.
it's good, but it's still TV. mcnulty is a caricature of a homicide detective, more in line with the "loose cannon" trope than the police depicted in the book. it's jarring, and it reminds me that "the wire" is entertainment, with narrative arcs, instead of real life, which tends to be meandering and largely devoid of meaning.
