Thank you for hating Forrest Gump! There are a lot of movies that I would quibble with on the list. Starting with Gump and Unforgiven and then heading straight for ET, sideswiping Platoon along the way. But sadly, I am not on the AFI selection committee. Can't figure out why not, with my stellar score and winning personality and all.
It's so funny that you pointed out Lawrence of Arabia and Dr. Strangelove. They are two that I considered lying about, because I know it's embarrassing not to have seen them. I will dutifully watch them at the earliest opportunity.
Or "oppourtunity" as a job candidate spelled it in an e-mail. Do people not know how to use the freaking spell check when they are sending a resume?! (Sorry, went off on a rantgent there.)
It's funny, a lot of the ones you didn't see I haven't seen either. (But I agree with your friend who said that you must see Lawrence of Arabia. If only for the intense male-bonding.)

Someday we can have an AFI party and have martinis and Veuve Clicquot and watch overrated top movies. We'll need the alcohol because most of them are war/western/adventurer types!
And maybe Elliot can join us and sing bad Olivia Newton John songs which I won't name because then they will be stuck in my head for days, damn you.
But that doesn't make it an American movie! I'm sure American studios have financed French, Indian and a hundred other country's movies. That doesn't make them American. Just because it's in English, it's not American.
Sorry - I don't even know why I care. Usually I'm happy for the British to be denied :)
See if you and your fellow AFI members can look into this... ;)
Too many movies in there that I haven't seen. Agree with everyone on Lawrence of Arabia. What's Tootsie doing on the list. I did enjoy it, but wouldn't put it on the all time list.
I love Tootsie. I just watched it recently and it stands up well. Top 100? Maybe not. But I'd bounce Forrest Gump, Unforgiven, Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas, Rocky and probably some others before Tootsie.
Nope - never saw Raiders. I'm not a fan of sci-fi, horror, war, westerns or adventurer movies. I make an exception for war movies, but the others... notsomuch. A lot of the ones I haven't seen fall into those categories.
Plus, and this might be blasphemy - I'm not a big Harrison Ford fan.
I think we should add a question: which one that you haven't seen do you most want to see? Ooh, that's a good addendum. I guess I have to answer Lawrence of Arabia! Or Dr. Strangelove. See how suggestible I am?

So, I'm thinking the key is... have Chris Meloni & Lee Tergesen star in all sci-fi/horror adventures.
