Why is most non-Loss SVU fic so bad?

Aug 08, 2004 22:55

Man, another visit to FF.net, and I'm ready to turn in my SVU fic gun. I guess I was spoiled, first in GH and then in Oz, by a plethora of really good, really different stories. To be fair, the collection in almost any fandom at FF.net is atrocious. But there really isn't a lot of good SVU fic anywhere. With the exception of post-Loss fic, it's ( Read more... )

Hello Ultraviolet. Let me start by saying that I lurk at TWoP and am thus well aware of your Stabler/Meloni lust (if not a little amused by it) and overall, I enjoy your intellectually stimulating posts immensely. Let me also state from the get go that, while I love the actor, for various reasons I'm not much a fan of the character. I think it's something to do with the macho/strutting bravado thing he's got going but I can't quite pinpoint exactly what bothers me. Anyway...

You stated that There is not one shred of evidence in SVU canon to suggest that Stabler is in any way threatened by, fearful of or disgusted by gay people

Can I beg to differ? Since you've brought up Fallacy I'm going to run with it. I posted the following in response to an anonymous poster (whom I suspect may have been you but I'm not certain :)) over at ob_fangrrl discussing the same topic ( ... )

Well, I'm happy to be here for your amusement.

I don't ever remember posting on ob_fangrrl. The name alone seems like it would keep me away, lol. But if it was in defense of Stabler, and on this point, it probably was me.

About Stabler's implicit defense of or sympathy for gay panic, you probably won't be surprised that I think that's a stretch.

Even if I accepted it, which I don't, I hardly think it's canonical evidence that Elliot actually has the feelings of repulsion or disgust himself. Merely that he can understand another guy having them.

Elliot's reaction is one of absolute sympathy and compassion for the boyfriend and it really annoyed me that he didn't just say to Eddie, "So what? You got to second base with someone who has the same equipment as you. No big deal, mate"."First of all, Stabler's sympathy isn't all that extreme. He does say to the guy, "You thought you were in love with a woman. That's what you knew." Not exactly "Oh, wow, man, you touched a dude! That is so gross - if it were me, I'd want to kill ( ... )

I thought Eddie had a heart attack?

Nonetheless, there were many more issues at play there. Eddie was in love. He had just found out that the woman he loved was lying to him. His brother had just been killed. He knew Cheryl was responsible and probably felt a little responsible himself. His world had been turned upside down. It would be unfeeling and heartless not to have compassion for that.

And really, being rocked that his girlfriend is a man is not exactly classic homophobia. It is one thing to be accepting of homosexuality. It's another to find out the person you love has been lying to you about her gender identity. Would anyone be expected to shrug that off ( ... )

I just travelled here from lawandordersvu, so forgive me if I overstep my bounds ;)

First, I applaud you for reading the gamut of fanfiction out there. I admit to staying close to my OTP and even then I stick around LJ lately and don't venture far. I've found most the stuff on LJ is far better than what's coming across lists and various other places. I can't get into E/O, but idledandy keeps luring me into E/A because of that luscious ADA ::shakes fist:: ;)

Second, I just thought I'd put a hand in on the whole Fallacy thing. I think you're right, I don't think that Elliot's homophobic (really because I write A/O all the time and I don't see him ever having an issue) and I think Fallacy's a special case. Not even all gay and lesbian people are comfortable with trannies.

Hey there! LJ has no bounds, so no overstepping is possible :) I think it's fun to wander through the lists and see what folks have to say. I've only recently started actually posting to my own journal. As you can see, I have a little trouble shutting up once I get going!

I can't quite accept the plaudits for reading the gamut of SVU fic. Anything with Casey as a sympathetic lead would probably send me screaming. Ditto for any kind of pairing involving Huang! But I am open to more than one OTP :)

Thanks for your insight on the issue of Stabler's possible homophobia. Now that I've practically done a dissertation on it, I'm sure the SVU writers will have Stabler become a gay-basher this season, just to spite me!

That's a good point. I think it's an area that causes a lot of discomfort and confusion.

Hahah well that's okay. Even if I disagreed, you at least have well thought out rants. I can't always say the same for myself.

Well you certainly read more than I do. I'm all for any/all combinations of Alex/Olivia/Abbie and heathers is working on a deeeelicious femslash crossover with Cold Case that is just so fascinating, I can't even deal.

I guess I'm all about the wimmens ;) Well, except Casey.
