Entertained the idea of bailing on FB earlier this week and the minute I opened it this morning, more moralizing. I'm officially logging out and breaking from it for a good while. Probably won't mean writing here more often (in that commitment, I have utterly and completely failed), but I'm picking back up some books delivered months ago via Amazon ( Read more... )

Not sure what you read but Dudley's always looking for recommendations. Our tastes are pretty far apart. I gravitate towards historical lit (Jane Eyre) and historical fiction (Queen Elizabeth smut).

So tired of the "if you don't agree with ____ then unfriend me right now!!"

Because on the one hand I think wow, social media is going to be the downfall of humanity - but on the other hand, maybe it's good that it exposes people for who they really are, thus saving me the trouble of investing any further into a friendship?? I dunno.

Currently reading Madison and Jefferson. I lean toward either evolutionary psychology (or some offshoot thereof, like neuropsychology or books about language or consciousness) or history/historical biography. I'm a big believer in the idea that truth is stranger than fiction. If not stranger, certainly more interesting.

I do see a lot more of the vehemence and "unfriend me" stuff from the "tolerant" left than the supposedly bigoted right, but there's enough sermonizing to go around. Maybe the next time someone posts that, I should IM them and say, "Hey. I've really enjoyed our friendship over the years but I saw recently where you wanted those who disagree with you about a certain single issue to end their friendship with you. I'm a big believer that if you feel that way, you should be the one to take action to end it and own that decision. I happen to disagree with you on that political issue. Ball's in your court. Sorry our years of friendship didn't live up to your standards regarding (insert issue here)."
