because - i learned in government class - free speech really doesn't include words that insight violence ("fighting words"), according to judicial rulings and some legislation. neither is slander, which nazi sentiment can be applied to, because it's malicious lies about blacks, jews, gays, hispanics. lies are *tchnically* not protected under free speech, although our leaders lie all the time, like, every day.
ANYWAY, it shouldn't include it, either. the original intention of allowing free speech was freedom to critize the government.
the thing I have to wonder about these people is if they actually believe what they are saying. I don't think anyone could analyze that argument rationally and feel that it is legitimate.
that being said, I think a lot of them just want attention, and don't actually fully believe what they are saying. A crowd of people marching out to oppose them just excites them and incites them to stage similar events. It would almost be a better opposition to let them do it, and let everyone see for themselves what fools they really are.
I don't think their message can catch on. Especially because the original Nazi Party didn't reveal their ideology on the Jewish and minorities until after they were in power. But hey, they do need to be opposed.
we also get the "you're just giving them attention" argument all the time, too. we don't care if it gets them excited, though, because it's not for them that we're protesting. we're showing the community that these kinds of hateful demonstrations should not and will not be tolerated, under any circumstance. we could care less if they want us there or not.
i also disagree with what you said about them not believing what they're saying. if people has been socialized a certain way, and are around enough people that agree with them, they will believe anything.
we probably believe something ourselves that others can't believe we actually believe it.
